mapsource with multiple units

When I launch Mapsource it tells me the City Navigator North America NT 2008 map I used with my Nuvi 260 has expired and that new maps are available for purchase, I now have a 2460LMT with the NT 2011 map, when I try to receive from device [2460LMT] [map] to Mapsource it tells me there are no maps in the unit to download.
My question before calling Garmin, can I retrieve the map from the 2460 to Mapsource? Once I get the map in Mapsource can I still use my old 260 with the new map or do I have to have the two maps available to use depending which unit is connected?

If I remember correctly, you can't get a map from a unit using Mapsource. The best bet is to download the current map for your LM unit and install to computer only. This updates both Mapsource and the map. Old maps are "uninstalled" through the Control Panel.
EDIT: You can only transfer the new map to your unit it was meant to go on UNLESS you have additional unlock keys.

My 1490t was upgraded to 2012.2 recently. My 295w still has 2011.3 maps, but I transfer data using the 2012.2 Mapsource version. No problem.

You should be able to transfer waypoints and tracks, etc. from Mapsource to your Nuvi or vice versa without concern about what map version the software or the GPS has on it. Routes could be a problem if there are changes to the selected roads between map versions.
There is no way to transfer City Navigator maps from one device to another using Mapsource. The only way to get the maps from your new GPS into Mapsource is to install a map update and choose the option to install the maps to the GPS and to your computer, or as Box Car says above, do an update to your computer only.

Since I just updated just my 2460 2012.20 I'll wait till 2012.30 comes out and do the computer and the 2460 at the same time

At the upper left corner, you can select an older version of Mapsource if you have a problem with routing when using your older Nuvi.
