Unusual Lockup

Here is an odd one. It's not a real big deal, I'm just curious if anybody has experienced anything similar.

I occasionalt travel the I-69 corridor between Mi and In. Everytime I have made the trip south my 885T locks up near the border. After continually trying to reset (each one resulting in another lock up) I get normal function back about twenty miles south. The first three or four times it happened it slipped my mind and I failed to save the tracks. The last three times I did save the tracks. Each lock up occured within .3 miles of each other and normal function on all three returned within two miles of each other. The most recent incident I didn't even try to reset it and it reset itself. I've let Garmin know about this ( waiting for response). Interestingly, for each of these trips I returned along the same path the very next day, this time heading north, and experienced no issue. So, has anybody else seen anything like this?

Custom POIs?

Do you have any custom POIs loaded? And do they have icon files?

If you look on Google maps in sat view you will see a thick grey line just north of Stokes Rd and maybe a mile or two before the state line and then the map changes color. It may be just a case the maps didnt overlay properly but it is interesting that it is about the same spot your problem kicks in.

And that grey bar is thicker

And that grey bar is thicker on the west side of the
I69 than on the east side. It is interesting though.
We need someone with a 885 to run a simulation.

I thought you were on to something

but my tracks get interrupted about 15 miles north of there at Jonesville road.

My thought....

I would blame it on Lightsquared.

Where is the GPS mounted?

Where is the GPS mounted? Is it on the dash or below as on the console of the vehicle? I had a similar problem around Terre Haute, Indiana and Pontiac, Illinois. An external antenna cured my problem.
Just a thought.

Mounting location

Mounted on the dash. That's an interesting thought except for the fact that I've driven 35K miles with it sitting in the same spot, in the same mount, it's NEVER happened anywhere else (including Australia and India), each occurrence was within the same .3 of a mile stretch, the occurrences have happened over a period of 13 months AND it's happened in at least three different makes of automobile.

This hasn't really been a problem so although a fix is not unwelcome, I'm really more interested, for curiosity's sake, in the cause. 5 or 6 times in almost exactly the same spot is odd, that it hasn't happened anywhere else, even more so.

Unusual Lockup

How long has this been happening?
Did you have another GPSr that didn't do the same?

re: Unusual Lockup

I had the same problem, the same as family members with other units (same model).

The solution (seems to be) to update your firmware. I believe Garmin issued a statement pertaining to this error that was occurring.

Anyway, updates have a way of fixing things... some times.

Update

I am up to date. I travel almost daily for work and use my GPS to track mileage for my expense reports. Every time I get assigned to a new vendor, I add them to my unit using the web. I connect to the computer on an almost daily basis and always check my unit status on the Garmin Dashboard. Before anyone asks, I have lifetime updates so map is up to date also.

My Guess

Are you going thru time zone changes?

I just ran a simulation with my 1350. It has an older map (2011.30). It did not lock up, but did show quite a jog in the southbound lane of the interstate.

If you post your model and map then maybe someone can run a simulation on the route.

Map Error

I had something similar a couple years ago with an older map. Same intersection every time would cause a reboot. Navteq confirmed it was a map error. Fixed in a map update a year or two later.

Now of course, the Garmin software should be able to gracefully recover from bad map data without crashing, but that's a whole other issue, isn't it? grin

2350lmt also locked

Just updated the firmware, and the 2nd map update since getting it a while back (this year). so far it hasn't locked up yet, but it did twice before, and this is the 2nd unit we've had.

What I can't stand is when the 2350LMT locked up, it can't be rebooted, it simply drains the battery. In other words, it's inconvenient enough to lose the navi, but one would think that you could reboot and be up and running again.

Knock on wood hopefully it doesn't do it again.
