Meanwhile the planet creaks and groans with overconsumption (rising per capita consumption). Everyone globally wants about six planets worth of resources. HOV lanes will be a distant memory....

It is getting too expensive to drive on these roads now.
IPASS
I like how they show IPASS, and we don't even have HOV or HOT lanes in Illinois. If we do, I'm not aware of any.
After a little research, in 2009, our former Governor, Rod Blagojevich proposed HOV lanes. I don't think that's going to happen any time soon.
IPASS transponders are convenient for a couple of reasons. First of all, if you don't have one, tolls are double. It allows you to drive through the IPASS lane instead of stopping to pay a toll each time. You can manage your account online.
As of January 1st, 2012, the tolls will nearly double anyway. A 40 cent toll will increase to 75 cents, without an IPASS, $1.50. There are some tolls that are already $1.60. $6.40 for a toll one way is highway robbery!
If it ever does come down to cameras being used in the devices, I would get rid of mine. I'd rather pay the higher tolls than have anyone snooping in my car. I'm getting really tired of these foreign companies coming up with ways to fine every move anyone makes, as if we're not paying enough?

Why worry?
If you've already opted to voluntarily install a government tracking device in your vehicle so they can follow you every movement in exchange for the convenience of saving a few minutes and cents each day, why be concerned that they can see you too? The solution is to dump the pass, not complain that the want that last 5% of your privacy after you've already freely given them the other 95% of it.
Never had an ez pass and never will.

What will you do when the government removes the cash payment method?
Are you going to stop using bridges, tunnels, and toll roads?

Thats not the same
because then it would be forced on me. I already avoid toll roads as a often as I can, but I know all roads will be toll roads eventually. The corporate owners of the government won't allow our Socialistic road system to last much longer. There's no profit in that.
EZ-P is voluntary so you get what you deserve; Government tracking of you with your permission.

Hate to burst your bubble there, but it doesn't really matter if you have an EZ Pass or something similar when you go through a toll plaza. Every vehicle has their license plate photographed and read by an automated system. If you use a toll pass, the plate number is compared against the plate on file for the pass. If you pay the toll in cash, the photos are a record of where you entered and exited the toll road or bridge.
If you don't pay, then the plate info is used to track you down to send a bill and/or a ticket.
Illiterate? Write for free help.
No burst bubble
You state nothing new.
I choose to drive up to the toll plaza, knowing full well that my plate and face are being photographed. Again, that is NOT the same as asking the government to install a tracking device in my vehicle, which you do with your EZP.
And yes I know all about RFID

It allows you to drive through the IPASS lane instead of stopping to pay a toll each time.
Considering the fluids left on the pavement at these booths by previous occupants, not having to stop there is a "good thing" for us motorcyclists.

This is probably nothing to worry about
Consider the source of the article... It's from "The Blaze", a Glenn Beck creation. (think 'FEMA concentration camps', health care for dogs, 'cash for clunkers' website taking over your computer). It's actually a patent application, doesn't mean EZPass will make you use it. If they really wanted to track you, your cell phone will give a lot more information anyway.

Thanks for the info
Wow.
Is this a forum for GPS systems or a forum about the gov't, good or bad? Hate this gov't sh$t on this site.

I think the idea of the cameras are for knowing how many occupants are in the vehicle, right now for 3+ there is no toll for HOT lanes. Or do they use another method for determining the number of occupants? I have seen side mounted cameras that are in a position to take a picture of the interior of your car.

I think calling a tollway transponder a tracking device, is a bit of a stretch. If it truly is a tracking device, can they (entities from the tollway) follow me home? Follow me to my destination? I don't think so. They basically can see where I've been, and when, and that's about it.
Hyperbole
Honestly, his saying that "all roads will be toll roads eventually" is a load of hyperbole and worthy of a tin foil beanie. But, at the same time it's in keeping with the general alarmist trend of this discussion.
If the government really wants to track you that closely, they wouldn't require an EZ-Pass to do it with.

not really that far fetched, Ed Rendell when he was governor of PA asked for permission to turn I-80 in PA to a toll road. Until about 1995 US federal highway tax funds could not be used to fund a toll road, the law was changed. Would not be surprise if other states had not considered the same thing.

The only important facts left out of this is that the Indiana lease is for 100 years, and the state, by contract, may not install, improve or upgrade any parallel roads, trains, or any other forms of transportation without serious fines. So not only has that road been sold off, when new roads are needed, too bad Indiana.
Yes this article is about toll roads, but do you honestly think that states aren't going to sell off, OK "lease", non-toll roads too? Not to worry. Like it says in the article there is too much money to be made, so you can expect the laws to be changed to allow this transfer.

I honestly think it soon isn't going to matter since the government as we know it will cease to exist; replaced by something that isn't money grubbing and respectful of its citizen's freedoms.

They have a new thing coming shortly to be able to get up to 32 speeders at a time. Photo's license plates so if you are in a pack of cars and whoever is speeding gets caught. I always thought it was proper to keep up with the flow of traffic but not anymore.
go with the flow

There is a thread on that.
