Most Sensitive Nuvi

By sensitive I mean which Garmin nuvi will lock on to satellites when others can't. I was checking out a route to use in a few weeks on Sunday. I put the same route in my 885t and my 765t. I was checking them sitting in my recliner in the family room with no good line of sight to the sky. I didn't particularly want a satellite lock but the nuvi does that automatically. I was not surprised when the 885t couldn't get a lock. I was a little surprised when the 765t did. There are windows beside my recliner but there is also a 12 foot deep screened in porch outside the windows.

Anybody compare a 765t to another model and find the other model more sensitive?

This rarely makes a difference but I was disappointed in one of my nuvis, I think it was the 350 but it might have been the 760 when driving down the hill from the Grove Park Inn in Ashville, NC. It's an old residential street with trees overhanging the street all the way down. I couldn't remember which way to turn on the interstate so I had to pull into a parking lot and wait on the nuvi. I wonder if my 765t might have gotten the lock on the way down.

Jim

my 765T is good also

Doesn't help much if you are looking for a newer model but like you, I've been impressed with my 765T for the most part.

Does well under trees, goes reasonably far into tunnels & recovers quickly coming out of them.

Does seem to take a while to lock on when it's turned back on very far from where it's shut off though (50+ mi?).

I have a new 2460. I was amazed that I was able to get a good satellite lock inside my house. More amazed when I got one in my son's apartment. The accuracy never got to the quality I'd get with a clear view of the sky but pretty impressive.

750 and 755T

I've noticed that my 750 will not get a lock when in the house away from windows but the 755T works just like it does in the car. It would be interesting if people would experiment with newer models to see which was more sensitive. That kind of information would be very useful when buying a new GPS.

Most Sensitive Nuvi

My 3790T has no problems anywhere I have found in locking in. I just hope Lightsquared doesn't happen.

some chips

are more sensitive than others. Garmin uses several suppliers for their chips so even with the same antenna one chip will have better specs than another. This means even two of the same model may not have the same characteristics if they have different chipsets.

testing

I had powered up all 3 of my units yesterday. Just now I placed them in the window and booted up.
1490t = 38 seconds to lock
295w = 70 seconds to lock, however this unit has to boot up, load maps & apps before starting sat search. When left in sleep mode, it wakes up with a sat lock.

Older Magellan explorist handheld = 90 seconds including boot up and loading detail map. I used this one for many years. Sometimes it takes 5 minutes to lock, even though it had been off for only a short time.

My 3790LMT is the worse. I can't get a lock next to my window when my previous Garmins had no problems in the same spot.

Satellites

I don't care if I get saterllite in my house or not, just as long that I get it when I get in my car.

My 1490t is good. I don't

My 1490t is good. I don't have to go the window or door. When its boot up in the house for updates it acquires a fix almost 30 seconds. I can enter addresses and check the route same time of entr because it always get a fix very quickly after its turned on.

Accuracy

I use an '04 Garmin Quest & a Nuvi 750 side by each on the dash on road trips. The Quest needs to have an absolutely clear view of the sky in order to get a satellite fix.

The Quest often gets lost in the trees while the Nuvi generally soldiers on. However, accuracy on the Quest can get down to within 7 feet, while the Nuvi never goes below 14. Go figure.

Why would I run two units at the same time? Because I can customize the data fields on the Quest- I like to know how fast I'm going, my altitude, miles driven yada yada, without having to reach in and change a screen view.

Europe

We just spent three weeks in Europe and Scandinavia and my 2450lm was super. Denmark,Sweden, Norway and Belgium. Found everything we asked it for... Driving and pedestrian mode. It was just great. Locked on satellites very quickly.

Was that 2450 originally loaded with the European map or did you buy a North America unit and added the Europe map?

260W vs 265WT

My original 260W has always taken a long time to lock, maybe minutes when I start to drive and then turn it on.
The 265WT locks very quickly. The difference between the two is dramatic.
I am interested in the comments because I am about to purchase a new car, and I am trying to decide between an onboard NAV unit and a new Garmin 5" unit.

No Problem

No Problem with my 885t so far. Locks in fairly well even in my home where others have a hard time finding a signal even with their cell phones, buy my 885t and my iPhone works fine.

Borrowed

A friend of mine returned from Europe the end of August and had purchased it. I borrowed it from him...It really worked great. It knew every hotel I had booked and led us there after getting off the trains. I tried to book as close to a station as I could. We rented a car for nine days and found it indispensable...We would have had many problems in Oslo and Stockholm finding our way around...If you are going I would highly recommend getting the Europe map...

I have a 255w & a755wt and

I have a 255w & a755wt and the 255 locks quicker more often even if it's the older unit.

750 & 760

My 760 consistently receives satellite signal quicker with less incidence of losing reception.

Can't figure out since they're supposed to be exactly the same model except for the Bluetooth.

Obstructed Sky

@JimD1, neither my 680, 760 or 1490 could keep a lock in a situation involving skyscapers or heavy tree cover.

Ephemeris data

The 265WT locks very quickly. The difference between the two is dramatic.

The reason the 265 locks on faster than the 260 is that the 265 stores ephemeris data from the last time it was turned on. As long as the data isn't too old, say a few days, the GPS will use the stored ephemeris data as a base to locate the satellites. Thus it locks on the satellites quicker.

If the data is too old, the 265 will likely take as long to be ready for use as the 260.

Thoughts

My 760 is better than my c580 at maintaining signal inside and metal buildings. The 760 is also better than my 255. I don't know that the original nuvi flip antenna added any benefit over the newer chips.

Changing location

When using the 750 in one area then turning it off and going to another area it takes a few minutes to locate the new sats.

When doing the same with my 2450 it takes less than 5 seconds to find the new sats.

It is so FAST!!!
