Loading Custom POI;\'s into in-dash nav system

We've got a new Jeep with what appears to be a Garmin in-dash nav as part of the electronics.

The owners documentation states that custom POI's can be loaded. Here's the text from the manual:

Custom POIs (Points of Interest)
You can manually load custom points of interest (POI) databases, available from various companies on the Internet. Some custom POI databases contain alert information for points such as safety cameras and school zones. The navigation system can notify you when you approach one of these points.

After downloading your POI database, use the Garmin POI Loader to install the POIs onto a DVD. Use the DVD to load the POIs. The POI Loader is available at www.garmin.com/products/poiloader. Refer to the POI Loader Help file for more information; click Help to open the Help file.

Note: Each time you load custom POIs to the navigation system, any other custom POIs already saved in the system will be overwritten.

I've been trying to do this for several days with no success. I think it boils down to how the DVD is formatted. If the DVD is in one of the video formats, it appears that the the POI Loader won't write to it.

Formatting the one DVD-RAM in FAT32 that I have looks to take about 4 hours.

Am I on the right track or am I missing something?

I will take a stab at this

Poi Loader compiles the poi files in to a "file" that has a .gpi extension. If you are using Poi loader version 2.7.0 then you could be running into an issue with poi loader. That version has a couple glitches.

Depending on where you compile the file and save it to you will get an extension with .poi That is not what is needed.

A couple things. Check the extension that got compiled. It should be xxx.gpi. If it is incorrect you can just rename to .gpi

You could also compile to a location on your computer, verify the extension is correct, then copy it to the DVD.

Read more about the glitches in version 2.7.0 here.

And...then it shoudl work!

There are several different kinds of DVDs.

DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM.

Then there is single layer and dual layer.

So, you need to start with a blank DVD that is the right kind.

Next it needs to be written to properly.
NERO Burning Rom software offers the following options:
DVD-ROM ISO (my first choice to try)
DVD-Video
DVD-ROM boot
DVD-ROM UDF
DVD-ROM UDF/ISO
DVD-ROM SecurDisk
NERO DiskSpan
AVCHD video.

So, you need a compatible CD or DVD blank that your in-car GPS can read, then you need to write files to it in the correct format for the GPS.

And then you need to files to be in the correct directory and filename and filetype that the GPS expects.

And...then it should work!
