I ran across this on amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-3490LMT-4-3-Inch-Portable-Navig...
"This item has not yet been released.
You may pre-order it now and we will deliver it to you when it arrives."
Amazon does not say they are out of stock, instead it reads "this item has not yet been released".
Seems Garmin is not shipping the units.
Why on earth did Garmin make a big announcement, and then not manufacture and ship the new units.
All this accomplishes is to halt all sales of Garmin GPS units by those customers who do not wish to purchase an obsolete model.
Great thinking from Garmin?
Could be anything from it's
Could be anything from it's taken it longer to get out the door to they found some significant problem which would only get worse if they put them in the hands of customers.
I'm never surprised by misadvertising anymore.

You're making something out of NOTHING
From the Original Garmin Press Release Announcing these New Units:
The 2012 nüvi product line is expected to be available in October 2011. For more information about individual models, features and pricing, visit www.garmin.com/move.
See that "expected to be available in October 2011"? My calendar is still on September. Don't know about yours.

Met their deadline
In our company, this kind of thing happens when one department meets their schedular objective and another does not - and they don't talk to each other. In this case the advertising guys did what they were supposed to and the manufacturing guys does not appear to have.
There is an even stupider explanation I hope is not the case. There is a dumb idea that announcing early and then not having the product available stirs up interest and thus demand. To me this is just being deliberately annoying. If you say you are announcing now and the product will be available in October, that is more acceptable but still not very good. My preference is for people to not tell me things they want me to act on until they have made it possible for me to take the desired action - to me that is just common sense.

Exactly

Exactly, Garmin has said from day one that these units would be available in October. If you go back and check you'll also find that most, if not all, of their announcements over the past few years have traveled the same route - announced with a release date 2 or 3 months in the future.
Sorry, but you have to lay this one on the shoulders of Amazon as they, and a lot of other retailers, have a long history of throwing darts at a calender to establish an availability date for new products. When new products hit their webpages they have no idea of the actual release date yet Amazon did have a date of October 12th (or something like that) posted withing hours of Garmin announcement.
You'll find by checking regularly that the date they do post changes often, as they get more information from the manufactures. So as of today, they have no idea what date they will receive these models so they have a more accurate date of "not yet released".

October was said in the big release saga
And that month hasn't turned the page just yet!
They still have some time to workout a few Firmware bugs. Then after release the consumers can work out the rest, the norm for Garmin.
Just a couple more weeks then you should start to see them shipping.

I am glad they announced the new models.
I had been thinking of upgrading to a 2460 or maybe even a 3790. I would have been upset if I had made this purchase just before the new models hit the shelves. Knowing that the new models are coming I can either wait to get one of them or wait for the prices to drop on the current models. Either way, I am ahead by knowing about the new models in advance.

can't please everyone
... Why on earth did Garmin make a big announcement, and then not manufacture and ship the new units.
Seems like people can always find something to complain about. Garmin announced new products that will hopefully ship in October. If they had not made the announcement and just released new products in October I'm sure someone would complain that they just bought a previous model (apparently thinking there would never be newer models) and were now upset that something newer was released and they considered their model obsolete.
Aren't all manufacturers like this?
Maybe I need to complain to Apple that I did not get my iPhone 4 the same day Steve announced, nor the iPad 2 was available anywhere the day it was announced.
I am also complaining why I still don't see Andriod "Ice Cream Sandwich" operating system on my wife's phone since it was announced almost 4 months ago.
The adage I live by...
"Be not the first by whom the new is tried, nor the last to set the old aside"
I had asked my father when I was a small boy "daddy, why don't you be the first on the block to buy, (whatever it was)and he gave me that reply in return. It cost nothing, but I've kept from being "stung" many times by paying heed to his comment of long ago.
They'll be here...
"Backward, turn backward, oh time in your flight, make me a child again, just for tonight."
One Word
Why on earth did Garmin make a big announcement, and then not manufacture and ship the new units.
