HOWTO: Importing POI Factory POIs into iGO 8 (Windows Mobile/Android/iPhone)

OK, to keep with the theme of giving simple instructions on how to add custom POI files to smartphone users, here's a simple instruction manual to get POI Factory POIs into iGO 8 (aka iGO Amigo aka iGO Primo).

A few notes:

a) The *ONLY* smartphone I've tested this on personally is a Windows Mobile smartphone that is no longer in my possession; this is one of those rare cases where I can't eat my dogfood on testing this with other OS's.

This is because I don't own an iPhone, and because iGO 8 for Android is OEM *ONLY*; you can't buy it separately at any price, and it is technically *not* legally available otherwise for Android. (This will be most useful to you if you have an Android phone which has iGO 8 pre-installed.)

b) Most of this info for Androids and iPhone is based on a summary of info on a number of other forums--fortunately the process seems to be well-nigh identical to that on Windows Mobile and Windows CE devices, which is the main reason I'm going ahead with this FAQ.

That said--iGO is probably THE easiest program to install POIs on if you're doing batch installs (at least until the versions of Sygic Aura with POI functionality come out).

HOW TO GET POI FACTORY POIs ON IGO 8 FOR MOBILE DEVICES:

a) Download your POIs (doesn't matter if they're GPX or CSV) and convert them to KML format using Extra POI Editor (this is the least likely to munge the file during the conversion--especially important for GPX files).

b) Instructions vary depending on whether you're using WinMo/Android or iPhone:

1) WINMO (TESTED)/ANDROID (UNTESTED): Copy your KML files to (sdcard root directory)/iGO/content/userdata/POI (if this subdirectory doesn't exist, make it); iGO8 will see them normally and you can select from there. (Some versions have the iGO directory as iGO8; the latter is true with Windows Mobile, reportedly the former is true with Android.)

2) IPHONE (UNTESTED): YOU WILL NEED A JAILBROKEN IPHONE AND AN APPROPRIATE TOOL FOR BROWSING IPHONE DIRECTORIES. Otherwise, follow the WinMo directions.

c) To copy speed-cam and red-light cam data also varies:

1) WINMO: Copy right to /iGO8/content/speedcamera (make the dir if it doesn't exist). It will automagically convert it to working format for iGO8. grin

2) EVERYONE ELSE: ...Probably not possible at the present time, because most of the tools to convert CSV or GPX files to .spud aren't available anymore. sad

Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the info.

Interesting

I have KML files on my auto nav system. I wonder if this will work????
I guess I will have to try it.
