Garmin Lifetime Map Updater Setup (Mac)

I use a Mac, but hopefully my experience will be useful to PC users too.

Last July Garmin released an application to enable users with lifetime map subscriptions to check and /or automatically download new maps as soon as the are released for their Garmin GPS. This was welcome news as I have a 2350LMT and like to keep it up to date.

I downloaded and installed the new software and after several weeks, because nothing happened to even indicate the software was working, I decided to find out if it was running correctly.

What I learned was I had failed to setup the Preferences to make it work as I expected. The critical ones are found under the Schedule and Installation tabs.

On the Schedule tab one must make sure "Automatic Downloading" is on, click the "Any Time" radio button in the Download Schedule section, and check the "Auto launch at Login" box. The latter choice assures that the program is running whenever you use your computer as indicated by a green triangle in the Menu bar at the top your computer screen.

On the Installation tab I recommend you click the "Install to my Mac" radio button. The other options: "Install to my device" and "Install to both (my Mac & my device)" my fail if your Garmin GPS isn't connected to your Mac.

These settings enable new maps to automatically download to your Mac as soon as they are released whether or not you Garmin GPS is connected to your Mac.

And, if you wish, you can click on the green triangle in your Menu bar to invoke a pull-down menu and select "View map update status." On the dialog that appears you can click on the "Check for Updates" button to initiate a check manually.

Bill
