AT&T's Android sales

AT&T's Android sales are catching up to iPhone
By Stacy Cowley @CNNMoneyTech October 20, 2011

AT&T activated 1 million new iPhones in the first few days after the launch, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega said Thursday on a conference call with analysts.

"It's been our most successful launch in history," he said.

But Google's (GOOG, Fortune 500) Android is chipping away at the iPhone's lead. Sales of Android devices doubled compared to last year, and almost half of the 4.8 million smartphones AT&T sold this quarter were Android devices, the company said.

Apple #2 in smartphones

Samsung overtakes Apple as leading smartphone vendor: Samsung has overtaken Apple as the world’s leading smartphone vendor, according to a report from Bloomberg, as the two companies fight over patent issues in several courts across the globe. Samsung is currently the largest maker of smartphones that run Google’s Android platform and, according to a U.K.-based analytics firm, has also captured 23.8 percent of the world smartphone market. Apple, the report said, is now the world’s second-largest manufacturer, with 14.6 percent of the market, followed by Nokia.

What's better

What may be better for you is not really so for another. It all comes down to what your are used to. I use Blackberry, Android, Mac, IOS, and windows all on a daily basis. I feel for what is available they are all pretty evenly matched. Just depends on what a person wants to spend and what they are comfortable with.

As mentioned early the Ipod is what every other MP3 player is compared to, Apple created the standard. Other manufactures have met and even exceeded that standard in one way or another.

What I will say about Android, at least my phone, it does not come from the manufacture or the phone provider with Mac software. My Blackberry came with software for both OS's and so does the Iphone. Does this make one better then the other? Not really. Again use what ever is comfortable for you.

For work I use the Ipad for most of the job because of the larger screen. The Android phone has my manuals also and I have used it but it is not easy to look at full pages on the phone. Yes I'm aware of larger devices that are Android capable.

Android dominates smartphone sales

From: AFP
December 07, 2011 6:51AM

MORE than 10 billion applications have been downloaded from Google's Android Market, which offers free and paid programs for Android smartphones and tablet computers.

"This past weekend, thanks to Android users around the world, Android Market exceeded 10 billion app downloads, with a growth rate of one billion app downloads per month," Eric Chu, director of Google's Android Developer Ecosystem, said in a blog post.

"We can't wait to see where this accelerating growth takes us in 2012," Chu said.

To celebrate achieving the 10-billion download mark, Google said Android developers would offer a selection of apps a day for the next 10 days for just 10 cents each.

Google's announcement comes exactly five months after Apple announced that more than 15 billion applications for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch have been downloaded from its App Store.

Android FTW!

and both iPhone 4S and android ICS 4.0 hit the streets and apple followers were never so disappointed as they are now smile

many of them realized that being loyal to blood sucking apple is not always paying off and they turn to free (or less expensive in a long run) solutions, e.g. android phones smile

if you ask me, my personal opinion is that Steve Jobs'es vision was the motor of Apple. that vision was to introduce the best and nicest smart devices onto market and at same time to bind its users for paying for pretty much everything (iTunes). just compare pricing of similar products between Android Market and iTunes and you will see what I mean.

it doesn't help now that SJ's biography says black on white that Steve's mission, after his ways and Google ways went opposite directions (they used to be friendly partners in past), was to destroy Android... and now it comes back and bites Apple in their asses. And that I am grateful for smile

Android is bound to win in a long run, it's getting better and better, every month. only open source approach gets real love from communities, even Microsoft learned that tough lesson.

p.s. I have nothing personal against apple, but i just hate their business model (closed, tight, restrictive, expensive, full of marketing propaganda, etc.)

Itunes is free

Itunes is free for Windows and Apple products.

There is free music, and podcasts on Itunes, not all of it has to be purchased.

There are free and low cost apps in the Apple store just as there is in the Android market.

I'll admit that Apple products are expensive. I admit I like my Apple products, Ipad and Apple Macbook. I also enjoy owning and using Blackberry, Android and Windows products. They all work well together. I can sync my calendar, mail, music and files between all of them easily with Google and Dropbox.

To be honest the Android phone gives me the most problems though. When it works it works well but I have to do a battery pull on it about once every other week. It gets to the point that everytime I goto the favorites screen I have to wait longer and longer for it to load so that I can use it. There are only 6 favorites on the page so it shouldn't take long for it to load. Don't get me wrong it is a great phone and works well.

I'm just saying that none of these products are all that they are cracked up to be. Just use whatever you like and enjoy.

You mean it's not supposed to crash???

certain android 2.2 releases are buggy

yup, I understand about iTunes being free as a software and so on. it's just most paid apps in there are much more expensive than their equivalents in Android Market.

besides with android phone you can load the content to its memory or SD card like it was an external hard drive smile
try doing it with iWhatever ... nope, it must get accepted, approved and optimized through iTunes, period. oh, and using Flash on apple products? is it even possible yet? on androids it works normally, Flash Player is free in Android Market.

as per your problem requiring pulling the battery out. I had this sort of trouble with early android OS on my G2, back in times when I was running 2.2 Froyo. GB 2.3 should be free of this problem. I honestly only restart my phone every other weekend and charge it up like every 2-3 days and have only 1 minor trouble with it (again related to current android version bug)...

I just wish that android phone makers were more "together" into releasing the OS updates faster and preferably at same time, because what is out there now is a mess. some devices got stuck with 1.6, some others are still being updated to 2.2 while others already did to 2.3 and on top of that ICS 4.0 is out already ... it should made more clear which phone can get which maximum version of android OS (some are limited by hardware in getting updates). this is the only mess with android I can really see.

Apple has a tiny slice of the personal computer market, and makes iPods and a couple other things. Apple is also one of the largest market caps, up there with XOM.

Oh Dear...

Well, the point was that VW and Porsche are two very different products for different market segments, regardless of ownership or lineage.

Just as there are those that desire the Apple user experience and there are those that feel the need to rebel against what is superior or root for the underdog.

I doubt Apple has any interest in buying Google.

No, but they do want them out of business, That was in fact a known "dream" and goal of Steve Jobs, who allegedly pledged at one point to spend his fortune driving them out of business.

Funny Story

I found this amusing.

http://goo.gl/OELBw

This is what Steve said about Android.

SAN FRANCISCO (The Blaze/AP) — Google can only hope that Steve Jobs‘ final vendetta doesn’t haunt the Internet search leader from his grave.

The depths of Jobs‘ antipathy toward Google leaps out of Walter Isaacson’s authorized biography of Apple’s co-founder. The book goes on sale Monday, less than three weeks after Jobs’ long battle with pancreatic cancer culminated in his Oct. 5 death. The Associated Press obtained a copy Thursday.

The biography drips with Jobs‘ vitriol as he discusses his belief that Google stole from Apple’s iPhone to build many of the features in Google’s Android software for rival phones.

It’s clear that the perceived theft represented an unforgiveable act of betrayal to Jobs, who had been a mentor to Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin and had welcomed Google’s CEO at the time, Eric Schmidt, to be on Apple’s board.

Jobs retaliated with a profane manifesto during a 2010 conversation with his chosen biographer. Isaacson wrote that he never saw Jobs angrier in any of their conversations, which covered a wide variety of emotional topics during a two-year period.

After equating Android to “grand theft” of the iPhone, Jobs lobbed a series of grenades that may blow a hole in Google’s image as an innovative company on a crusade to make the world a better place.

“I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong,” Jobs told Isaacson. “I‘m going to destroy Android because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go to thermonuclear war on this. They are scared to death because they know they are guilty.”

Another potential trouble for IOS

HP has recently decided to open up WebOS as open source. Although it may be weak and small, but it has way less licensing and intellectual property issues (money) than Android. It may give hardware manufacturers another boost to the Linux crowd. Give it time, it may join Android to totally overtake IOS.

Apple and Steve Jobs were not saints either

exactly .... and it seems the biggest hypocrites usually scream loudest when someone "steals their" shared/joint idea and makes something a little different (and maybe better) ...
IMHO Apple stands no chance in defending their products in courts and suing everybody else for making something similar. reason is simple, others made it better and The Rotten Apple is scared it WILL loose its pie.

I think the "Patent Wars" we are observing between all software and hardware companies are going either to destroy them all or leave only the strongest last one standing ... it's ridiculous, because at same time it's setting the whole industry backwards, limiting growth, jobs, sales, development, etc.

I wish the times came back when lawyers had nothing to do with software and internet, because so far it seems that the loudest whining b*tch having strongest army of lawyers keep winning and that is NOT GOOD.

Memory

Tried upgrading the memory on an Iphone lately?

I like my Ipad but when it comes to upgrading the memory it is near, if not, impossible.

Most other phones you can add more memory to them, the Iphone and Ipad you cannot. This is why I bought the biggest capacity Ipad when I got it.

Other than that this Droid versus Mac issue is a waste. Use whatever you like that works for you.

HTC (Android), 16GB card, Sprint

Speaking of memory...

One of the coolest things I've ever seen was, a Win 7 phone that someone took apart, that had a 16 gig micro SD card (class 10) that held the OS, and other files. It was buried in the phone, however... Great idea though.

It also had the storage SD available that was user accessible.

Pick What You Can Afford, Need, or Will Grow Into

Upgrading iPhone memory is a non-issue. Choose what memory level you can afford, need, want or plan to grow into, that's all. I've had phones with expansion memory cards and now I have plenty of these cards laying around. I like the Apple iPhone approach to memory.

Android Overtaken

Reuters reports on new data from research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech showing that Apple slipped past Android by the narrowest of margins in fourth quarter U.S. smartphone sales, with Apple's iPhone taking 44.9% of the market and Android taking 44.8%.
"Apple has continued its strong sales run in the U.S., UK and Australia over the Christmas period," Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at the research firm said.

"Overall, Apple sales are now growing at a faster rate than Android across the nine countries we cover," Sunnebo added.
The results, driven by Apple's blockbuster quarter in the wake of the iPhone 4S launch, saw Apple double its U.S. sales share year-over-year while Android slipped from its 50% share a year ago. Apple yesterday reported sales of 37 million iPhones during the quarter, far exceeding expectations.
