Email from Garmin (Reimagined. Redesigned.)

What are they describing in an email just received from Garmin that simply says in headlines: Reimagined, Redesigned Ready to move you 8-24-2011 Garmin

A new product probably. Any ideas what's up?

Their emails are usually late not ahead of something.

I'm...

I'm gonna guess new software apps or downloads to give current units more options and or feature upgrades.

I'm going to speculate...

I have absolutely ZERO knowledge of this - just a very active imagination - so here goes a W-A-G:

In North America, all Navigon products will become Garmin's - since Navigon isn't as well known here...

OK... have fun with your own W-A-Gs. grin

Don't know but I see in the email that it has a link to Facebook and Twitter, neigher of which I do. I guess I should get in the 21st century and join!!! confused

Garmin Email

I'm hoping they will announce that purchasers of Garmin Units will be placed on the Garmin payroll as official Beta testers.

Or maybe a commitment to write the software correctly the first time around.

But I'm placing a bet on free lifetime map updates for all units going forward.

I love...

surprises! I have so many Nuvi's, and doubt seriously if I will, depending on the news from Garmin, sprint to my nearest Fry's and add another. The present Nuvi's do what I want them to do...get me there...much, much better than the Thomas Brothers map bibles, or at least, if not better, easier to read!! Take heart, the pre-news from Garmin is having the effect they hoped it would...

Another new video on Garmin's FB page...

Showing a smartphone taking an 'unexpected exit' while talking about a mount...

Hmmm.... some sort of solution to hold your phone while it's running an all new PND app - maybe the map will have some tactical advantages existing mounting solutions don't have... Hmmm...

All Car Tech

All Car Tech's article on the campaign, and their speculations: http://www.allcartech.com/news/1065202_garmin-launches-crypt...

I believe Garmin is finally releasing their Android app. The question is, will it be a port of Streetpilot with on demand downloads of maps, one of their two offline mapping solutions, or something else entirely?

All Car Tech's W-A-Gs

Are no better (or worse...) than what we've got going on here smile

I'm leaning towards "smart mount" hardware coupled with "new" app -- incorporating Navigon. The "smart mount" isn't unheard of - TomTom does such a thing for iOS devices.

Garmin And ASUS Announce New Mobile Handset Strategies

This is from October 2010:

http://garmin.blogs.com/pr/2010/10/garmin-and-asus-announce-...

Schaffhausen, Switzerland and Taipei, Taiwan/October 26, 2010/Business Wire — Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN) and ASUSTeK Computer Inc. (TAIEX: 2357) today announced a strategic decision to alter their current co-branded business model for location-centric mobile handsets. The two companies will not introduce any new co-branded handset models going forward, but will continue to sell and support models that have already been introduced to the market. ASUS will design and manufacture new models of ASUS-branded mobile phones, some of which will include preloaded Garmin navigation and Location Based Service (LBS) applications. Garmin will expand its mobile handset application development and plans to offer navigation and other applications through certain consumer application stores.

Since the announcement of the Garmin-Asus strategic alliance in February 2009, the companies have developed and marketed six devices. These products are available through carrier and retail channels in a large number of countries. Customer support continues to be of utmost importance to Garmin and ASUS, and Garmin-Asus smartphone customers will continue to receive product support, software updates and/or downloads from either Garmin or Asus, depending upon the region.

Additional details about ASUS and Garmin’s future product roadmaps will be discussed during their independent third quarter earnings calls on October 28, 2010, and November 3, 2010, respectively.

Just wait until they post the next teaser tomorrow!

Teaser

The teaser today seems to slam smartphones. I hope they are not assuming that this new product will save you money. I can't imagine anyone canceling their smartphone subscription because a fancy new GPS.

I don''t see it quite like that

If it's slamming anything - it's slamming data plans and data caps resulting in overage charges - and in that, they do have a point.

It's looking more and more like an app with full maps on the phone... an maybe some kind of phone mounting solution with charging???

Not everyone has data caps

So far all the teasers show a smartphone. This one talks specifically about data caps. My GPS is certainly not even close to being the main user of data so I don't see the point. Email, phone, text, internet all exceed GPS usage. I am all for a dedicated GPS. If it is a new product for some reason, if it isn't affordable, people will continue to use their smartphones because it's easy.

Not Everyone Has Data Caps...

...very true. My current plan does not. But people do have them - and today's teaser seems to indicate the launched product will minimally impact any data cap.

And about the showing of phones... garmin & asus already tried to sell a 'garminfone' and it failed miserably... Garmin will not get into the phone hardware business again after that... the Navigon acquisition should be a clue that one of the futures they are pursuing in a big way is what Navigon does - software for phones, and OEM installed devices.

--
*Keith* MacBook Pro *wifi iPad(2012) w/BadElf GPS & iPhone6 + Navigon*

Sounds good to me...

I just question the sensitivity of smartphone GPS receivers when compared to dedicated units. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have a really nice GPS app for my iPhone. However even with a dedicated unit, I have trouble in major cities. I can only imagine that using a smartphone as a primary GPS might just exacerbate the issue. Perhaps a device that would interface with a smartphone? Best of both worlds?
