Falagar on Garmin's Forums reported today that there will be no further releases of Mapsource.
And I am sorry to disappoint, but yes, MapSource has not been worked on in quite a while, and there will be no new releases of that software.
You are of course welcome to keep using MapSource, we will keep it on the website for the foreseeable future.
If you haven't switched to Basecamp, you might want to think about doing so, since no new releases of Mapsource means no bugfixes. I just wonder if they're going to discontinue MapInstall as well.
This is interesting...
We have different GPSr units, some using Mapsource, I never used Mapsource, I'm migrating to BaseCamp from Roadtrip, I use a Mac.
I just hope we are talking about the same thing!
First, let me say that I use "symbol" and "category" synonymously.
So I assign an appropriate symbol to a waypoint, restaurant, POI, beach, medical, fuel, airport, etc. That categorizes the waypoint. I can do this in RoadTrip, BaseCamp, or right on the GPSr.
I know this works in BC and RoadTrip, I can not say for certain MapSource does the same, but I would think it does.
Then when I want to find a restaurant and I don't remember the name, I can pull up the restaurant category and browse that smaller subset instead of all waypoints. BaseCamp also allows the waypoints to be viewed by name, type (category/symbol) and date.
If I assign a category in BaseCamp (BC), it will show up on the GPSr. And, since the GPSr library shows up in BC, you can see it change on the GPS as you change it in BC. I'm not sure if this is how MapSource works.
When BaseCamp came out, I was sort of less than exuberant to try it for I was just getting used to RoadTrip. But I gotta tellya, BaseCamp is pretty slick and worth learning.
I really like the way my GPSr shows up in BC and I can review what I have on it.

OK
Just fixin to say I am giving up on BaseCamp and staying with Maysource. The above post makes me want to try harder to learn BaseCamp.
Too old and too tired to learn something new when I don't have to but maybe .......

Thanks for the Alert
Like others have said, I will continue to use Mapsource even though it is discontinued.

Yest It Will !
I have the 2450 that has the category feature. If I assign the category in Mapsource it will show up in the gps??
Yest it will, but so far it looks like Garmin has removed this feature from Basecamp.
I guess we can add this to the list of lost features along with the JCV images
I WIll Experiment Further
First, let me say that I use "symbol" and "category" synonymously.
In Mapsource I can choose any symbol/picture I desire from the list, but I select categories by placing a mark in any one of 12 check-boxes. Symbols and categories are definitely two different things in Mapsource.
If I assign a category in BaseCamp (BC), it will show up on the GPSr.
In my initial tests I found that any new waypoints I added in Basecamp , and then transfered to the 885T , showed up as "uncategorized" on the 885T.
I will experiment further to see if I can duplicate your findings.
Real Time
If I have BC open and my 60CSx connected, I can view the contents of the 60CSx in BC, and edit the waypoints on the GPS directly. If I edit a waypoint, it changes on the GPS immediately. No transfer step.
This turns out to be pretty good to organize, or catagorize, waypoints.
Hope you can get this to work for you.

Still works for me
MapSource still works just fine for me. If they don't update it I don't see that as being much of an issue as long as the maps will still import into the program. Updates aren't always better..........
I'm using version 6.16.3 which should be the latest version.

Keep in mind that Diesel is using a handheld unit while the rest of you are using Nuvis. They are two different product lines and do not operate exactly the same.
To bad, I really like
To bad, I really like mapsource. I guess I will eventually have to get used to basecamp
The Progression
Now that I think about it some more, I did use Mapsource for a little bit. I used to use Mapsource (Windows), or what ever it was, about 5 years ago, when Garmin was not yet Mac friendly. I didn't use Mapsource too long. Garmin came out with BobCat, the Mac equivalent of Mapsource, shortly after I got my 60CSx and I quickly stopped using MapSource and have used a Mac ever since to maintain my Garmin GPS. BobCat was superseded with RoadTrip, and now RoadTrip looks like it is being one-upped by BaseCamp.
Keep in mind as I said before, we are talking different GPS units, different computers and operating systems, and different applications (Mapsource, Roadtrip, Basecamp). Hopefully we can help each other.
I know I am very pleased with the ease I can maintain my GPS with Garmin apps on a Mac, and I hope it works out for those using Mapsource that will migrate to BaseCamp on Windows.
Sounds like BaseCamp is going to be a unified product for either OS. This should help support big time.

Birdseye Imagery
I just loaded Basemap and will have to figure things out and play with it.
I see reference to Birdseye Imagery, but can't figure out what the heck it is. I'm sure someone out there can enlighten me.
I also do not get 3D as an option in Map View, so I guess that means that my graphics card isn't up to snuff.
Thanks

Good

Good video at http://www8.garmin.com/learningcenter/training/birdseye/ that may help you understand it. It's basically for handheld units and not the Nuvi as I understand it.

Thanks for the tip, diesel . . .

I have the 60CSx, too, but I haven't been using Basecamp enough yet to realize I could do this. That's much easier than using Mapsource to edit the waypoints!

Sorry to hear that

Basecamp still too limited
I started using Mapsource when it was distributed on a cd with a Garmin "outdoor" gps I bought. I've used mapsource to manage the various map products I've had on an assortment of units. Basecamp shows promise but I think I'll stay with mapsource for awhile. Lack of support for waypoint classifications is a show stopper for me. Garmin got me used to relying on the feature on the Nuvi series and being able to group by map symbol just isn't good enough.
MapSource
Garmin will soon announce BaseCamp (or an updated version) as the replacement for MapSource.
Ditto. -Plus..

Ditto. Plus the ability to split & save maps isn't currently supported in BaseCamp like it is in MapSource, so I'll still keep and use both.
It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.
Both
I lost my BaseCamp install in a computer upgrade to System 7. I will be using both for a while.
Will stick with mapsource
Until it stops working, will stick with mapsource - and wait for future improvements/maturity with basecamp.
Using both

I'm using both a nüvi 760 and a GPSMAP 78S. Mapsource works fine with both of them. Yes, I do have maps on the 78S and it routes perfectly as did the 76CSx I had as my original GPS unit. The 76CSx worked like the 60 CSx tha diesel has. The newer 78S works like the automotive units as far as waypoints and such are handled.

Routes
I had stopped making routes with Mapsource because the via points that I used to force routing would be announced on my 1490. I tried making routes with Basecamp. I made several segments, then joined the segments into a single route. Alas. My Nuvi still announces the via points.
