On using a Garmin 660 as a GPS sensor for DAQ?

Hello all. I'm a newbee to this forum, but it looks interesting. I'd like to use my Nuvi 660 as a GPS sensor for a vehicle data acquisition sensor. Can anyone suggest how I might extract Lat/Lon or other info via the USB connection? Thanks.

GPSGate

I don't have any first hand experience with it, but I have read about a program called "GPSGate" that is supposed to do what you are asking about. You can Google it to find it.

I don't know...

I don't know of a way to extract current coordinate info from a 6xx series Nuvi over the USB port, in either NMEA or the Garmin-proprietary protocol.

If a way to do it exists, I'd like to know about it!

I tried to find out how to do that too... never did. Finally gave up.

About the only 'solution' I ever ran across that came close was something that could be used to include Nuvis in a Fleet Management product that's out there.

GPSGate

I briefly used it a few years ago and it worked as described. I then bought a copy of Microsoft Streets & Trips that came with its own GPS sensor.

THANKS All!

Thanks for the tip on GPSGate and the other help. Will check it out. Somewhere in my box of antique electronic junk is an old RS-232 GPS sensor that was used with a laptop. Forgot I had that until you mentioned MS Streets. If GPSgate doesn't do it, I may look for that old yellow sensor?

NO GO on the GPSGate

Despite an encouraging first install, GPSGate failed to recognize my Nuvi during its configuration screen. Then, GPSGate stopped opening altogether on my W7 laptop. Tried uninstalling, and reinstalling it, but no dice. Found my old Delorme Earthmate, but it is ancient, and likely not compatible. I'd even have to get a USB to DB9 converter. I think I'll look into other low cost GPS solutions.
