my tomtom was stolen

the tomtom was in the glove box with the universal mount that I keep on the dash. I must have not locked the door- no visible signs of entry.
It was duct taped into the mount, which they cut and left the mount.
what bothers me more than the losing the tomtom is all my data that is on it!

sad

it'll probably end up in a land fill

As the thief wasn't smart enough to take the mount it's not worth much if anything to someone looking to buy. Most pawn brokers wouldn't touch the unit unless it was complete with the mount and power cord. My guess is they will try to dump it to someone but without all the parts it would end up in the trash bin.

they took the mount that

they took the mount that came with it, but not the universal mount I bought separate to place it on the dash. they took it out from under the duct tape I was using to make it stay stuck to the univ mount.
the part that really gets me is that it happened on a gated military base! and the one day we left car the car unlocked... figures. we are always double checking the lock as we walk away, but hands were full this am.

Sorry

That really sucks. And some data may be lost forever.

no guarantees

Being on a military base is no guarantee that your property is safe. But now understanding where you were when the unit was stolen it was probably more for personal use than for sale/pawn.

Since this was a military base, any security cameras in view of your automoblie?

I am sorry to hear your unit was stolen, but this might be a good time to consider putting a security code on the next one.

sorry to hear about your

sorry to hear about your unit being stolen. I had a similar thing happen to me back in the 1980's when the cb radio was the "in thing". I had my car broken into and the radio stolen. Since then I don't leave tings in my car that I am not willing to loose.

My CB Too

Happened to my old CB too back on October 19, 1987. I remember the date because it turned out to be Black Monday. Funny thing was, the CB was not working properly anyhow and they basically wound up with a crappy radio. Had to get a new lower dashboard panel and put a new PL-259 on the antenna cable. The scary part was I almost left my tools on the passenger seat that night. I was feeling lazy and thought about leaving them but decided to take them into the apartment as I wasn't going to need them with me that Monday.

Weird what you remember...

Back up

Did you backup you data to your PC? I try to every now and then.

I don't like a password on mine because it is so much trouble. I think I would rather someone get to use mine if it is stolen than to go to the trouble of the password.

Just lazy I guess.

I just had an 80's flash back !!! CB radio was in at that time, I had a home base and mobile and I went by the handle of LA-Z-BOY, then in the late 80's I went to HAM Radio. Now I'm feeling OLD !!!!!!

Thank You

Thanks for the reminder to keep my unit out of sight whenever I park my car. When I first got it I would take it with me, but you get lazy after awhile and start leaving the thing in your car naked to the world.

Time to reset the brain.

I got my ham license in 1989. Three more years and I am eligible for QCWA. Gad how time flies...

yeah, I keep it out of site,

yeah, I keep it out of site, and that's a good idea about the security code and looking for cameras in the parking lot. I don't like the data being out there more than I mind losing the unit. I think on the next one I will make 'home' the neighborhood grocery store.

I don't assume the base is safer than anywhere else, just trying to figure it out, because I am generally really obsessive about making sure it's locked. Just a really odd coincidence that it happens on the one day I probably left the car unlocked. I mean I assume there is not a universal Nissan unlocker...
Thankfully no damage to the car, and it could have been much worse. Even a bump (hit) and run in a parking lot could cost more to reverse.

Thanks for letting me vent.

I feel your pain. I just

I feel your pain. I just had my Nuvi 3790 stolen after valet parking at a wedding and the SOB's went into my glove box to get it. I know, shame on me for not locking it up.

The thing is, i used the lock feature and i'm glad to hear (from what i have read) that even though i'm out the cash, the SOB's who took it won't be able to use it. I just dropped another $400 on a second 3790 and you can bet that it will be with me at all times.

As for data and home, this go around just to be safe i made HOME an intersection near my house. The whole thing sucks, but like you said, it could have been worse and more expensive.

Thanks

Thanks for posting this. I was wondering how to get rid of an old GPS that I no longer want, you have confirmed that the best way is to just leave it "cleverly hidden" in the car.

LOL

LOL...

I sometimes hope someone will steal my TomTom as it's a piece of garbage. Especially compared to the latest GPS devices like Google maps...I seldom use my TomTom GPS units any more.

Sorry To Hear About Your Loss

Especially so since it was on a military base. On a ship, theives were dealt with harshly when caught by their peers...then there was Captain's Mast if they were offically caught.

Not to say it was a service member, there are plenty of other folks on base, but still sad.
