Start here

Try for the basics first*, before attempting more complex things such as POI categorization, icons, audio, etc. When/if you get hung up at a step, there'll be lotsa folks here ready to help.

*Basics = load a POI file from computer to GPS, find the POIs on your GPS, create a route to go to one of the POI locations, etc.

You can also take a look at

You can also take a look at Gary Hayman's "Garmin GPS

Tricks, Tips, Work Arounds" At:

He has an extensive amount of info on loading POIs on his site.

Do the above AFTER

Do the above after you make sure that your PC settings are correct and have done a backup of your GPS.

There are two Beginner Exercises to help you.

To make it easy, when you click on the first link below, hold down the "Cntl" key as you left-click. That will open a new "Tab" in your browser in the "Tab" bar. Click on that 'Tab" to do the first exercise - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.

The first link makes sure settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.

This next link helps you get a backup by attaching your GPS to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup)

See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 and if you want voice alerts you will need sox.exe and wav files.

Charlie. Nuvi 265 WT and Nuvi 2597 LMT. MapFactor Navigator - Offline Maps & GPS.

two directories

1. storing your CVS files: I made a directory called "Custom POIs" and inside it I have several sub-directories:
POIFFactory Red light Cameras
POIFactory Speed Cameras
Airorts
Hospitals
etc.
Within each of these subdirectories I have stored a single cvs file. For example, the Airports subdirectory contains the Airports.csv file.

Along with a csv file can also be a Picture file (bmp) and a sound file (mp3). Note that not all GPS models can play a mp3 file. It is important that the file names are exactly the same except for the file-type.
For example, the POIFactory Red Light Cameras subdirectory contains files:
Redlight-Cameras.bmp
Redlight-Cameras.mp3
Redlight-Cameras.csv

2. storing files which will go onto the SDHC card: I also made a separate directory called "SDHC Card" which contains sub-directories:
Custom POIs
Garmin
Music
etc

3. Run the Garmin POI Loader program. When asked where to save your custom POIs: Garmin Device or Computer - SELECT Computer.
Select the folder to save our POI file to be:
SDHC Card\Custom POIs (from step2)
Then select the folder where the data files can be found - meaning the csv files, select:
Custom POIs (from step1)
Only specify the Custom POIs folder, not any of the sub-directories.

4. Answer other questions the Garmin POI Loader program will ask.

5. You will find a single file called "Custom POIs.gpi" in the directory SDHC Card/Custom POIs
Copy all folders from SDHC Card onto your GPS unit's SDHC card.

6. When powering up the GPS you will be asked if you want to copy the files onto the GPS - say no.
If you get tired of saying no all the time, then say yes, click the checkbox to NOT keep asking, and select SKIP to skip copying the files.

Hope this gets you on track.

Not true on later models

Not true on later models esp the 1350 (I have one).
You will never get rid of the question till you put them on the gps. I put them on the card and have to always answer the question.

And...yes...this is a change that Garmin made. I have no idea why, but a correspondence from them was that it was a good thing to incorporate in newer units. Huh!It was already in the units and "you" took it out.
