Safeway too

Well, actually both Giant and Safeway in the Mid-Atlantic region have competing gas rewards programs. Giant is clearly winning the battle in this area now. Safeway, I believe -- you must spend at least $50 at once to get 10 cents off (as opposed to Giant's $100 -- but can be accumulated within 30 days). Interestingly enough, it seems Shell is the main benefactor for some of these regional grocery chain promotions. Shell and Giant were originally suppose to end the gas rewards program last summer. But, due to its popularity (and increased business for both Shell and Giant), its still active indefinitely.

Giant goes beyond 30 cents

Actually -- you can have more than 30 cents deducted from Shell using the Giant Gas rewards program. The highest I've ever gotten was 50 cents (someone told me they had $1). The program is also in effect in Virginia and Delaware from what I can tell. But, Shell is one of the more pricier stations as Skykid2 pointed out -- and you got to spend some serious bucks on groceries to really make this work. Its a fine balance -- because at some point you probably could save money on grocery products at BJs, Costco, or Sam's that would offset the gas savings.

Is it just me or >>>>

.10 a gallon is good, but they really aren't passing much savings on to us, if I understand it correctly.

Spend $100, get .10 per gallon (1 time). At 15 gallons, I am only saving $1.50 for spending %100. Barely a 1% savings back. Sucks

Spend $1,000, you get up to $1 off per gallon. At 15 gallons, I save $15 (not even 5 gallons) for a 1.5%. If I don't spend the $1,000, I don't get squat.

Is it just me, or am I looking at this wrong?

Shell just changed the rules on their card. Now you have to charge $500 a month then they will give you ten cents a gallon credit on the first 100 gallons of gas you buy that month. Needless to say I quit using their card.

Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

BJ's or Sams Clubs

I just go to BJ's or Sams Club gas stations. They are about 5-10% cheaper and the price changes usually daily to reflect the current price.

Here in the US. ALL GAS COMES FROM THE SAME SOURCE! This is well documented. The ONLY difference between brands is the additives that they add to the gas. There is no such thing as "bad gas" anymore as all the gas stations fill their trucks from those huge gasoline pipelines that run across the US from the refineries.

There is something similar

There is something similar to this for Husky Gasoline (which is owned by Sunoco). They are advertising Husky Litre Alerts, where they will tell you a location each day between a 2 hour period that is selling gas 10cents a litre cheaper than regular price.

Great promotion in my mind, just have to be close to one, one day... one day. smile

.

The way I see it with the grocery store connection (IE:Bi-Lo Fuel Perks)... I'm buying the groceries anyhow. If they didn't offer the discounts I still have to eat. Yeah $15 (I'd get the full $20 but that's not the point) vs $1000 isn't a drop in the bucket but if your saying that $15 is nothing... got a pen I'll give you my address, write me a check for $15, I'll take it, I'm not proud at all! grin Is it a ploy to get you to shop with them and not the competition, oh heck yeah... and in my case it's working real well!

Kroger gas discount

Kroger's program has been going on for over two years now. It works at both Kroger and Shell stations. It's based on how much you spend in the store. You get 10 cents off on one fill for every $100 spent in the store up to a max of $1. A prescription refill counts for 50 points ($50) regardless of the actual cost. Occasionally a prescription transfer counts for 100 points. The Kroger station regular price is always within a cent or two of all the other stations in the area, so the savings are real. I believe that at Shell stations you can only redeem 100 points (10 cents off) per fill.

The Kroger discount resets at the end of each month, no carry over from the previous month.

If you don't fill the tank at least once a month you probably don't really need the discount. even just driving to and from work 12 miles each way I use up all my discounts every month.
