Mapsourse-1490 Map Draw Problems

Anybody having weird map redraws on the unit(1490)when using maps created in Mapsource?

Maps

Maps or routes created in Mapsource?

Routes

Sorry for the confusion, I meant routes.

they're not the same

Mapsource, Google, Mapquest, Streets & Trips, DeLorme AND YOUR UNIT all calculate routes differently. The only way to get the unit to follow a route is to plug in enough waypoints to force it to calculate it as you laid it out. I don't know how many routes I've laid out using Mapsource only to have the unit first recalculate the route before putting it on display. Even though you send a route, your unit (at least mine do) see it as a starting point and a destination with maybe a waypoint or two thrown in for giggles.

It's really pretty pathetic, if you lay out a route, the GPX code is quite specific and all that is discarded so the unit can do its own route calculations.

source of this problem

As Box Car said. To clarify I'll add, that when you are transferring route from mapping software to gps unit only waypoints are being transferred (at least for Garmin). So when you are trying to activate this route unit has to generate it according to those waypoints. And because preferences for routing can be different in unit and routing algorithm can be different as well than you can get "weird" results. No to mention if maps versions are different or you are using for example google and then transfer route to Garmin.

This is known issue, and a lot was said on gps forums about it. So far best solution is what Box Car said: create enough waypoints to force unit go along desired route. Especially if you are trying to get along scenic route and faster equivalent is nearby (like highway for example). Sometimes you have to mark every road crossing and even points between them to make unit calculate same way like mapping software.

Draw Problems

Thanks for the replies, I understand how the unit recalculates the routes brought from Mapsource; the problem I'm having is different but hard to explain with words.
I have a screen shot of the problem but no way to attach the file here. I'm going to see if I can join someplace on the internet where I can post the picture.
On the meantime I will try to explain the problem; as I put waypoints in Mapsource and create a route, everything looks OK and normal but when I bring the route to the unit at some of the waypoints created the colored line that shows the route goes berzerk! The colored map line instead of just going straight, direct and round lines show and go every which way around that waypoint.
It is not Mapsource because I tried an older version at work and it has to be the unit because the same route shows properly on my 765. A friend of mine owns a 1490 and shows the same problem when I load the route.

That's also quite common

The reordering of waypoints is also quite common. If you go into routes after the unit calculates the route you can reorder them. That's one reason it's a good practice to include a point number with each one if you have more than a couple. This behavior is one reason I no longer try to program scenic routes into the unit. It's much easier I find to get to the beginning of the scenic segment and then just display the map on the unit. Most scenic routes are fairly well marked so using road signs and the displayed map makes it fairly easy - and another good reason for keeping paper maps so you have a wide area overview.

Draw Problems

.

Have you tried actually running the route?

The Zumo had an issue like that with one of the previous updates and the routes would show crazy route lines like that, but when you actually ran the route, they didn't come into play and the route ran as expected.

Draw Problems

Unfortunately when running the route it still looks the same and is so confusing I have to stop.

Reboot

45 minutes into a two hour journey this weekend my 1490 shut down and then re booted, went back to navigating as if nothing had happened. Spooky.

It looks the same, but does it announce those crazy routing turns? Or does it just show that way on the map screen?

Draw Problems

I doesn't announce the crazy turns but I'm riding a motorcycle and I'm just going visual and if there happens to be some other roads nearby I have no idea if I have to turn or not. It is actually somewhat dangerous!

Reboot

My 855 does this frequently (several times a week). A couple of places on my route have RLCs or Speed Cameras a block apart. The 855 will sometimes reboot when alerting for the second camera.

Built In Units

Next car you get be sure and get a built in unit. I have had nothing but problems with every Garmin I have owned. (6 models) I have a built in unit in my 2007 Lexus and not one single problem and it has many more capabilities.... Not one problem!!!! Sure the portables cost much less but is it worth all the problems and headaches they have??? Reading all the posts on this site you wonder how Garmin stays in business. What is the deal???? Am I being to harsh????

By the way I have a 2450LM which so far has been the best unit I have owned...nothing but problems with 250W, 650, 750, 755T and 1490T.

How old are the maps?
What is the cost to update the maps?

Just to chime in, what did the in-dash unit cost?

I had just crossed the border into Ontario, on highway 417. It is the first long trip I have taken after the latest map update.
