2460LMT Internal memory and 1490LMT Headaches

Does anyone know the size of the built in memory in a 2460LMT or 2360LMT?

I just bought a new 1490LMT and installed the 2012.10 maps. I noticed that many junction views which appear on my 885T did not appear on the 1490LMT.

I called Garmin and we discovered that the size of the JCV file was only 46Mb compared to 367.5MB on the 885T.

Garmin blamed this on the lack of memory and instructed me to delete all unused files (such as voice, text and help files). After deleting almost everything I was willing to give up, I just barely had enough space for the larger JCV file. I reinstalled the maps a second time, but it still installed the smaller JCV file. I believe this is another problem which has been discussed in other forums.

I manually copied over the larger JCV file from my 885T, and I could now see all the junction views on my new 1490LMT.

The problem is that there is only 13.9MB of free space for future updates. I know that I could install a small map set on the internal memory, and the remaining maps on an SD card, but I resent the fact that Garmin has sold me a new product that won't accept the very first map update without deleting other features and purchasing an SD card.

As much as I hate Garmin right now, I enjoy the fact that I can create waypoints and POIs and share them amongst my other Garmin receivers. For that reason I am considering the purchase of a 2360LMT or 2460LMT, but only if I can confirm if they have 8GB of internal memory.

Can anyone verify the internal memory of these units?.

Whether the unit updated the maps is not the problem. Did you get the full junction view file?

Response from Garmin

Garmin said to select the Lower 49 region. I tried it and got the 46MB file. I think it was a canned response and no one there knows or cares what is going on.

Garmin Spin

Garmin support says that the 46MB file is from a new vendor and is compressed. However, checking junction views from DFW area to Edmonton, AB there are 4 junction views missing from the smaller file as compared to the larger one. From DFW to Alamo, CA there were several missing.

Seems like (as usual) Garmin

Just got a Nuvi 2450. How do I find my junction view file to see what size it is?

I hooked it up to the computer but couldn't find a file that it may be. Where should it be?

You have to show hidden files and folders, and uncheck hide protected operating system files. It's under Tools/ Folder Options/ View.

Maybe i'm missing something

I tried the Tools/Folder Options/View but still cannot see the .Jcv file. In which folder on my nuvi is it.

I believe it's in 'System' IIRC.

Did you open up My Computer, and click the nuvi?

The file will be in the .System\JCV folder. For the 2012.10 maps, the JCV filename will be D3060020A.JCV

Yes

Yes, it's in the .system/jcv folder. I setup a 2450 for a friend yesterday (firmware and maps) and I think the JV file was approximately 245000KB(if memory serves me correctly).

The full JCV file is D3060020A.JCV of size 367,560 KB and the smaller version is D3153020A.JCV of size 46,089 KB. Currently there's no way of downloading the full version into a 1490 from the Garmin site.

One basic problem here is that Garmin cannot customize the JCV file to match the map set a user selects to download. With complete CN NA NT 2012.10 map file (gmapprom.img) at 1.4GB, there's really no point trying to download the full map set into a 1490. I'll be happy having Canada+boarder states in my 1490 and having the remainder of the maps on a SD card. If Garmin can customize the JCV file to match my map sets, there shouldn't be any issues regarding available space on 1490.

Still no luck

Sorry, I guess I was not to clear in my last post. I am looking at my Nuvi on my computer (in My Computer). I re downloaded the map update again last night just in case I had missed the JCV file. Still no sign of it on my Nuvi. When I look at the Nuvi on my computer I get
Garmin Nuvi (F)
Garmin
Lex Pkg
GPX
Help
Jpeg
Keyboards
Poi
Text
Vehicle
Voice
If I open the "Lex Pkg" folder I get Bilingual Dictionary,
If I open "GPX" I get "Archive"
No sign of the "System" folder.
One other point, can I delete the "Lex Pkg" file. I think it is an option that you have to pay for but I am not to sure if it is needed for anything else on the unit.
I have deleted every voice that I do not use and it let me download the full map set without the "Not enough memory" message.

Just got this from Garmin.

I just got this from Garmin,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

During the Garmin Map Update process you may find that it is not possible to load the entire map to your Garmin GPS device. As map updates increase in detail, they also increase in size and some devices do not have enough internal memory to store the entire update.
If you would like to have all of the map regions available on your unit, you can load the remaining map data onto a SD or micro SD data card (please see your manual to see which card is right for your device).
During the update process:
1. Select a region to install to the Garmin GPS device
2. Select to install the maps to the device and computer (PC). Mac users need to select "install the entire map to the Mac"
PC

Mac

After the installation has completed you are ready to install the remaining maps from the computer to the Garmin device. You can follow the steps below, or for more information you can read the article How do I install mapping to my device with MapInstall?
1. Place the data card into the card slot in your device
2. Connect your device to your computer
3. Turn your device on (it may turn on automatically)
4. Double-click on the MapInstall icon on your desktop (if you do not have MapInstall on your desktop, please open your program or application menu and select MapInstall.)*
5. Click Next to select the device or data card that you want to load the maps to
6. Click on the region(s) you would like to load to your device
7. Click Next
8. Click on Finish to build the map set that will be sent to your device

After the transfer completes, you will be ready to use your device.
Please note: The data card must remain in your device in order to view the additional mapping you have loaded to it.

As Juggernaut mentioned, you have to show hidden files and folders. In Explorer, press Alt-T to go to the Tools menu. Select Folder Options then click on the View tab. Next, click on the Show hidden files and folders radio button. Last, uncheck hide protected operating system files. Click OK, then you will see the .System folder

GarminMapUpdater V2.6.15 is out now

After a few tests I have determined that no matter what map is selected or memory that is available the 1490 gets the 46B file.

The download time remaining seems to be screwed up by 100's of hours. The download rate is also way off.

Still no luck

Sorry WAASup, i have done all of the above and still no sign of the missing file.
It must be something on my end because I do not even see the .system folder in the back up file I made when I first got my 1490.
I am running Windows Vista on an HP laptop.

Update.
I connected the Nuvi to another computer running Windows 7 and I can see the JCV file ( 45,0MB) on that system. must be something on the laptop.

If you backed up the 1490 and didn't have the show hidden files options set, the .System folder would not be copied to the backup. It should show on the nuvi drive though in Vista or Windows 7.

I know a source for the JCV

I know a source for the JCV file, but it is not from a Garmin website. To post the location in public might get that web source into trouble.

BTW, my nuvi 750 does not do junction view, so the JCV file is of no use to me.

SDHC Card

You can put the map files onto a SDHC card in a directory called Garmin.

For example, F:\Garmin

File names are important.
Here are a list:
D3060020A.JCV
GMAP3D.img
gmapbmap.img
gmapsupp.img (this is the really large file)
gmaptz.img

The really big file on the internal memory is called gmapprom.img, but when you put it on a SDHC card you need to rename it gmapsupp.img

So, I am just thinking - that maybe you:
1. backup your nuvi's files
2. delete files that are not important
3. get your new map update from Garmin's website
4. copy the 5 map files from internal memory to the SDHC card
5. delete the map from internal memory
6. restore the files that you deleted in step#2 above

Note that I used the word "maybe". I haven't tried this - so I don't know if a Nuvi will be happy having no map on the internal memory while having a map on the SDHC card?

Garmin Have Provided JCV Downloads

Garmin provided .JCV files for a 37xx issue (http://goo.gl/cBw73) with the 2011.40 maps:
http://download.garmin.com/support/2011_40_JCV/NA/D3191000A....
http://download.garmin.com/support/2011_40_JCV/EU/D2152010A....

Perhaps in the future, Garmin might provide 1490 users with a separate download for the larger .JCV files.

http://download.garmin.com/support/2011_40_JCV/EU/D2152010A.JCV

The JCV file for North America in this download is only 83MB, but that may have been the full size for the 2011.40 maps.

I know that the 2012.10 maps added many JV's in my area, but I never bothered to look at the size when I had 2011.40.

From my experience copying the JCV file form my 885T to my 1490, they are all interchangeable. This download might help the 1490 owners to a small extent.

No Joy

I tried the 426MB file at http://download.garmin.com/support/2011_40_JCV/EU/D2152010A....

put it on my sd card. It wouldn't work. No junction views. I went back to the 367MB file.

@jjen, the D2152010A.JCV file you downloaded was for the Europe maps, and will not work with the North America map. You'll need the D3191000A.JCV file for that (from the first download link).

Also, you must use the same version of JCV file and map. A 2011.40 JCV file will not work with a 2012.10 map (nor will a 2012.10 JCV file work with a 2011.40 map).

Cleaning up unwanted files

I had problem with my old TomTom GO730. Most space takeup files is picture files. This is what happed when I try to update mapping and only small free space left. After having problem to update mapping, someone told me to delete all pictures files. And then I try to reloading the update mapping. Behold, it work and check on free space.

So for Garmin, try deletes those picture files. It may free more space. Picture files take a lot lot of spaces. Good luck.

Worth a try

Sum file?

Could the "x.sum" file (mismatched or lack thereof) in the JCV folder have anything to do with it?

This is interesting

I enjoyed reading this thread, and have not yet updated my 1490LMT to 2012.10.

However, I actually don't like junction view that much. The "lane assist" feature is the one I like, and I find the "junction view" somewhat distracting, and by the time I look at it, it is too late, and it times out anyhow.

.sum file not related to junction views

perpster wrote:

No, they aren't in the picture at all.

From DorkusNimrod's post in this thread:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/32623

"The .sum files are checksum files and are generated whenever a diagnostic test is run on the unit, either by the user (from the diagnostics page) or from the Garmin factory."

lmt updates

RickLeb wrote:

Even though I created enough space (by deleting some files), the map update still installed the smaller JCV file. The smaller file contained some JV's around Toronto which I had seen on my 885T with map version 2011.10. But it did not contain many new JV's around my home town which became visible on my 885T after upgrading to 2012.10

At first I thought that might be a bug in the update process, but now I believe that Garmin is deliberately installing a reduced set of JV's in order to save space.

I would never have realized that JV's were missing if I hadn't had my 885T to compare it to.

I did return the 1490 to Costco when I discovered the limitations.

Imagine paying extra for the Lifetime Maps & Traffic (LMT) and not being able to do the very first upgrade.

Wish I had this if before. It appears I am one of the fools that have a 1490lmt.

1490lmt headaches

HOW?????????

Is this the solution to have all JVC files on Nuvi 1490 LMT?

Quote:

1) Use the online map updater to install a small section of the maps onto the device. I believe that the smallest selection available would be "Canada & Border States"
2) Use the Map Install application, and select all the remaining areas. Select the SD card as the install point.

If that is the correct procedure, I think they need to make a much smaller map selection available on the online map updater, or let the owner choose the SD card as the install location.

Very interesting reading your comments! I've just purchased a new Nuvi 1490 LMT, received it today, and did my first map upgrade. Of course, as to no surprise, I got the same answer as everyone else on this forum: lack of available space. I'm a Garmin fan, so this is very disappointing for me.

What RickLeb wrote sounds interesting. Should I understand that by downloading only a small section of the maps available for my device (Canada - USA border, as suggested), it will crush the smallish *.JVC files that are presently on my 1490, and replace it with the full size JVC file for that "Canada - border states" map selection? I do have a 4 GB microSD card, so I could then add the remaining maps to it.

Would this be the solution to have the full 367.5 Mb maps downloaded to my Nuvi 1490 LMT?

Thanks!

(Being francophone, sometimes my phrase composition in English is awkward...)

.

Put the large JCV on the card, and delete the small one. Get rid of extra voices, help files and others that you don't need, like vehicles.

Make a backup of all the unit files as well. Do that first!

I wasn't the one who said that, but no that will not work. When you download new maps (no matter how small an area) you will always receive the small JVC file. The "only" thing you can do is manually download the larger file, and replace the small one which was installed automatically.

If you can delete enough unnecessary files on your device, you can make room to install the file on the internal memory. Otherwise you can just install it on the memory card.
