Does anyone know what a .sum file is? I have a couple of voices (when looking at my unit with a usb on the computer) that have two type extentions. Like English_American_.vpm and english_american_.sum
I have no idea what I did to accomplish this feat. The question can/should I delete the .sum versions? Most of all the other voices have only .vpm
Any clue what I did and how to avoid duplicateing whatever the heck i did?

It's perfectly safe to delete the .sum files from the unit. The .sum files are checksum files and are generated whenever a diagnostic test is run on the unit, either by the user (from the diagnostics page) or from the Garmin factory.
The .vpm files are the actual voice files and should NOT be deleted (unless you have backups and are looking to free some nuvi drive space).

DorkusNimrod is absolutely correct.
I have deleted the .sum files on all my units anytime they appear with no ill effects.
They are small and don't take up much room at all, but they do clutter up the screen when you are looking at files on the GPS.

Hey guys; Thanks for the response. I wasn't sure but now I certainly am. I will get rid of them. I've been having a blast with changing the voice tex. People who ride with me are spellbound and can't believe what there hearing. This site is an absolute Godsend. Thanks again guys. It's great for you to take the time to help the newbees enjoy the world of Garmin.
