Loading POI Files on SD Card

I downloaded some new POI files, and when I tried to install them POI Loader told me there wasn't enough room on the 1690 to install them. So, I went back to the beginning and told it to delete the existing POI's, then I told POI Loader to install everything to the SD card. That worked, but now every time turn on the Garmin it asks me if I want to load them from the card, and I select the option to load it. But, when it is turned off and then turned on again, it asks the same question again. Is there a way to force it to automatically load the POIs from the card without the question every time?

Thanks!

.

My 775T only asks me when I load new POI's on the card, but I'm not familiar with the 1690. I would have thought they would be similar...

Loading POI Files on SD Card

I have an 660, and I put all my poi's on it. It does the same thing everytime it is turned on it ask if I want to save to the gps. I have done it once or twice and once done I don't get the pop up again until I load new poi's on the card or take the card out then turn the unit on without the card in. Are you sure it actually loade the poi's on to your unit?

If I understand the OP when loading to the unit message was not enough memory.Putting them on sd card and trying to load to gps would get same result and wouldn't load.

Some units you can answer yes to install to unit and the next screen would give option to keep on card and not be asked that again. See (link no longer available) this is for 265 but similiar for some units.Members have reported this will not work for some newer models.

May want to free up some space on the gps.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31186

Loads at Time of Use

It loads them on the unit to the extent that they are available to use while driving as long as the unit stays powered on. I can do lookups of locations in the POI's, and it does alerts for the red light cameras, etc. But, if the unit is turned off, like when I stopped for lunch today, and then turned back on, I get the question about loading them again. when making short stops, like for gas or pit stops, I can tell the unit to stay powered on to avoid the re-load, but for long stops, or overnight, that isn't an option.

I don't get a 2nd question/option about keeping them.

I had to already free up space on the unit in order to load the latest map update -- that is when I ran out of room for the POI's.... sad

Where are you finding the

Where are you finding the custom poi's on your gps? Are they in your where to/extras/custom pois?

If you load them to the gps you will be able to pull the sd card out and still use them.

As already said, if you originally tried to load to the unit and did not have enough memory, then when the question came up to load to unit...that would not work either.
I suspect that they are still on the card. On early units as already stated you can put a checkmark in a box to not see the question to load again. On later units you will continue to get that question every time you power up and as long as the card is in the unit. There is no way to stop that message.

To clarify a little. If the poi's actually did load to the unit then you need to remove the card till need it again because the unit thinks you are loading new poi's again.

Not sure if this works but.......

I hear the issue. Something I did was move all my music, pictures, books to the SD card and left the POIs on teh original GPS.

This is not a new question although the question as it pertains to the unit IS new. You might want to do a search of our database as I think there is a solution already out there.

Garmin nuvi 1350lmt Custom POI message

I have custom POI's installed on SD card, everytime I turn on the Garmin nuvi 1350lmt GPS, I get this message, New Extras data found on card. Would you like to install this data so that it will be availabe if the card is removed? I choose NO, there is no other options after this such as to turn off reminder. I'm unable to find a setting to turn this message off, my POI files are located under EXTRAS/CUSTOM POI/. I checked FAQ, but unable to find an answer that would work for this Garmin 1350.

Found Problem

After reading this reply, and a couple others, I decided to do more troubleshooting. In doing so, I found the problem.

I went out and got the Garmin out of the truck and brougt it into the house to test out. When I powered it on, I got the normal screen, "New Extras found on card. Would you like to install this data so that it will be available if the card is removed?", and I answered Yes. It then ask again for the location, and I accepted the default of "1:/garmin/poi/poi.gpi". Within in seconds, it came up with another screen about "Installation Failed. Not enough memory on...". I didn't remember seeing that screen again, so I pressed OK and moved on. I then powered off the unit, went out and re-installed in the truck and turned on the ignition. Everything was the same up to where I selected the location and pressed OK. After a few seconds, the screen flashed white with a very brief image of a box and then went to the mail screen. I selected Where To, went to Extras, and all the POIs were there.

I brought the unit back in the house and powered it on again. It went through the same screens, include the "Installation Failed" screen, I pressed OK and it went to the main screen. I went to Where To, Extras, and found all the POIs. There is no option to tell it I did not want to see the message again, though.

Meanwhile, I found a workaround solution -- I created 2 Custom POI files to load from with the POI Loader, one for "Home POIs" and one for "Travel POIs". This allowed me to shrink the size of the POIs so it fits in the available memory. I also removed some WAV files that really weren't needed.

Thanks to the suggestions and thoughts everyone expressed here, it helped me troubleshoot it.

Search Done

I did do a search, but the only thing I found was suggestions to free up memory by removing various and sundry things, which I had already done.

That may have been due to my not know exactly how to word the search phrase, though.

Just what do you have on the unit?

Based on your troubleshooting and this post, just what are you storing on your unit as far as POI are concerned? You do not need to put any CSV, GPX or WAV files on the unit. POILoader reads those files from your computer and then writes the GPI file that contains all the data needed.

If you have "source" files on the unit, remove them. This will free up all the room they are occupying.

If you are not comfortable with this, DON'T do it.
I don't ever remember having a room issue on my Units, starting with my 265W then the 765t and now my 3790. The first thing i did was get rid of all the help files not in English and in my case German also.
I got rid of all the different language files i didn't need either. Keyboard stuff also. In other words, I speak two Languages. I keep everything related to these two Languages, the rest i dump. That should free up a lot. Dump all of the EULA if you have that.

There are 2 choices here.

Choice 1: Do you want the custom poi's on the unit? If so and there is not enough memory then you need to free up space. After doing that you can then install direct to the unit and not use the card. You will never be asked to move them to the unit every time.

Choice 2: Do you want your poi's on the card. If so, then you will be asked that question of moving them every time you turn the unit on. There is no way around it. I know, I have tried. I prefer mine on the card so I just say no.

What is on your unit?

As boxcar has already asked, I think a number of us would be interested in exactly what you have loaded to your GPS unit. I would have thought that your unit would have had enough space to accept a large number of custom POI files from POI-Loader - especially if you had removed extraneous help and voice files. On my 765T the extraneous voice files are 10 times larger than the custom POI file I have loaded.

Do you have .csv or .gpx files on the unit itself?

Correct - I have a 1690 and have plenty of room

Do exactly the above. I have a 1690 that I deleted all the help files, all the different languages, etc. I have the latest firmware installed, the latest map and have over 330,000 custom POI's loaded on my 1690 and they are not on the SD card.

I know this makes too much

I know this makes too much sense, but ya think after all the calls/emails Garmin has had on the "out of memory" on various units, they would allow a semi permanent setting to store some information on the SD card!

Oops...forgot who we were dealing with...
