Map Update

I was under the impression that once you selected to download the update to your unit and computer that you could update another unit that also had lifetime maps without having to download again. This didn't work for me. I ended up downloading again for over an hour. On the first download I did select to leave the update file on my computer. Can someone tell me where I went wrong?

You should be able once the

You should be able once the maps are installed on the computer.Go to start, programs, garmin then select map install. You may have to put in the product key number.

I'm confused

I thought Map Install was for adding additional maps to the unit or SD card and that Garmin Map Updater was used for updating maps.

interesting

.

I believe you would need to choose the option to save the installation files to the PC. If you did do this, then disregard this comment.

I updated 4 GPSs going through MyGarmin and saved to PC and GPS each time. The program downloaded only the first time. The other 3 times when it went to download it quickly skipped to the next step.

You're right, this should reduce the time needed for subsequent updates by avoiding redownloads. Maybe someone else has a thought as to why it didn't work for you. Note that if updating 3+ GPS units, you need to click the "Leave installation files..." each time.

Darn, I'm pretty sure that when you click the "Leave installation files...", the download is saved to your computer somewhere, but I haven't found a web link to help me. For Windows users, the update file when saved, may be stored in your computer's default Temporary Internet Files directory and would be a very large file with a file date of your download date and it'd be a large file. Does this ring a bell with anyone who can provide more info.

dumb question here but I

dumb question here but I thought that when you tried a map upgrade it up graded your firmware as well. If that is the case would you not have to go through this process twice if you use different models such as a 255w and 355T?

To avoid the forced firmware update

Do the following :

DorkusNimrod wrote:

Right-click on the file named GarminDevice.xml on the nuvi drive located in
x:/Garmin and select "Open With" and choose Notepad. Look for the following line
approx 6 lines down from the top:

< SoftwareVersion >320< /SoftwareVersion >

The current software version on the unit is listed here. The example above is 320 (version 3.20) and coincides with the actual version flashed to the unit. Change the 320 (or whatever other version number it is) to 420 or to whatever the current available Garmin version number is. Make no other changes.

*Note that I had to add spaces in the example line above so the forum would not interpret the line as valid html code. Don't add the spaces that I added above.

After doing so, save the file (file/save). Don't unplug or power off the unit...keep it connected to the PC. Run the registration process again which should now let you register the unit. After doing so, be sure and delete GUPDATE.GCD if it gets installed on the nuvi again somewhere in the process.

Don't worry if you somehow mess up on the file editing as this file is regenerated at every nuvi power cycle.

From here on afterwards, you will have to delete GUPDATE.GCD from the nuvi every time after running WebUpdater since each time you do, it will find the newest update and reinstall GUPDATE.GCD again since you will still have an older version on the unit.

If you haven't yet done so, you can now install the version of your choice from the Perry archive site at: http://www.gawisp.com/perry/agree.html

Editing the GarminDevice.xml file simply temporarily fools WebUpdater and/or the registration process into thinking that the most current software verison is already installed on the unit. After the nuvi is power cycled & GarminDevice.xml is regenerated, the software version listed in the file will again list the older version that is currently on the unit.

You will also again have to re-edit the GarminDevice.xml file just before before installing the map update to avoid the forced firmware update.

On my Windows 7 the maps are stored under the "C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Maps" folder, each version of map is under it's own sub folder.

The current MapUpdater program is stored under the "C:\Users\nnnnn\Downloads" folder where nnnnn is the Logged in user's name during the download.

MapUpdater is the program I ran for the second update. Didn't help. There must be someone here that updated two units that can tell me what I did wrong. Garmins info so far is no help. The odds of finding someone at Garmin that knows anymore than anyone here is remote.

I updated both my 1450LMT

I updated both my 1450LMT and 260W (with purchased lifetime maps) in one download from Garmin.

As others have said ... you have to select "leave installation files" in the initial download and run Mapupdater for each GPS.

If you did, in fact, select "leave installation files" ... are you sure that you downloaded the installation files a second time?

Reason I say that is on my first pass, I updated my 1450LMT ... on my second pass, I updated my older 260W.

On the second pass, Mapupdater first appeared to be downloading the installation files, but then quickly moved onto the second step. It was probably checking the registered lifetime map info for my 260W, developing a map uplock number and installing the 260w info into Mapsource.

Also, not sure of the reason, Mapupdater took a lot longer to install the finished maps on my 260W than it did to install the finished maps on my 1450LMT ...
so even though I was able to bypass downloading the actual update files, the process to update each GPS was about the same time.

In other words, it took about the same amount of time for Mapupdater to "map download+preparing maps+install map" on my 1450LMT as it did for Mapupdater to "no map download+preparing maps+install map" on my 260W.

Map updates and old map files

Is there any reason to keep old map files? I have 4 old maps on my c drive and need to clean up to get more space. do I need all 4 or will 1 or 2 old files be okay or can I delete all old map files.
thank you.

You can uninstall them

thank you.

Feel free to get rid of older maps installed on a computer to be used with Mapsource. For Windows users, each map uninstalls like ordinary programs--go to Control Panel, choose the "Programs and Features" or the similar icon with older versions of Windows, then uninstall them.

On the other hand, if you have room on your computer's hard drive, one thing that can be gained by keeping these older maps is to zoom in on an area of interest to you, then switch from the newest to the oldest map to see how streets have been added or realigned, built-in POIs are added/removed, etc.

Not the Second Time

I did select "leave installation files" on the first update. Did not select it for the second unit. Maybe that was the problem. I'll try that next time. I ran the Mapupdater from where it was saved the first time to update the second unit.

Thanks
