Google Maps AutoRoutes You Around Traffic--FREE + No Ads!!!

"You don’t have to do anything to be routed around traffic; just start Navigation like you normally would, either from the Navigation app or from within Google Maps. ... Starting today, our routing algorithms will also apply our knowledge of current and historical traffic to select the fastest route from those alternates. That means that Navigation will automatically guide you along the best route given the current traffic conditions."

Sure it will......do you work for Google ??

Hope it works good.
The other companies attempts to do that have been less than successful.
Can the "traffic report" component of the route decision be disabled ??

Nope, don't work for Google just very happy that after 15+ years of being told what I can and can't put on my GPS units by Garmin (and paying tons of money for map updates!) that now there are literally thousands of creative and innovative apps that I can use on my smartphone.

I've been using the traffic feature everyday and it works great, though admittedly I haven't been driving around LA or NY.....lol!

iPad Version of Google Maps

I believe that the iPad version does not have voice guidance. Are there other differences?

Nothing is "Free" with Google

Everyone is paying for Google's "Free" - they just don't realize it.

Free to me

So how exactly am I paying Google? I don't remember ever sending them a check or giving them my credit card number. Sure my phone manufacturer may have paid them a license fee or something like that to put Android on it, but my phone would have cost the same whether it had Android, WindowsPhone, or something else on it. I have AdBlock Plus installed in Firefox, so their not getting ad based revenue through the internet from me either.

Data about you is collected and sold.

It's nearly impossible to avoid these days....

Sure, Google gathers data and sells it--so does just about everybody else and those are companies I PAY money to!

Buy anything online? Data about you is collected and sold...

Order anything from a catalog? Data about you is collected and sold...

Buy anything with a credit card? Data about you is collected and sold.

Do you do business with: Yahoo, Hotmail, Netflix, Redbox, etc.? Data about you is collected and sold....

And, as we know from the recent expose with Tom-Tom selling data to LE to help set up speed traps, we know that GPS companies collect data about us and sell it too...

Have you read Garmin's Privacy Policy?

Here's a clip: "We and our service providers may also use "pixel tags," "web beacons," "clear GIFs," or similar means in connection with Site pages and HTML-formatted e-mail messages to, among other things, track the actions of Site users and e-mail recipients, to determine the success of marketing campaigns and to compile aggregate statistics about Site usage and response rates. We may also engage one or more third party service providers to serve online advertisements on our behalf. They may use a “pixel tag” to collect anonymous information about your visits to this Site and to other websites, and they may use that information to target advertisements for goods and services."

Note in particular this section of Garmin's Privacy Policy: "This Policy does not address our practices regarding information that we collect through our products or applications..."

Hmmm, so what data IS Garmin collecting about people who use their GPS units/software and what does Garmin do with that data??

Considering that companies I pay money to regularly collect and sell information about me, the fact that I have never paid Google a single penny and I still get to use any of their great FREE services such as Google Earth, Google Maps, Google Nav, Google Voice, etc, I think they're doing better than most companies.....

This is the price we pay

for all the "free" stuff on the internet. I think it is a small price seeing as how absolutely anything I need to know about is available 24/7.

Well actually.....

......you might want to bone up on what Garmin is doing with the personal information that they collect about you directly from your Garmin GPS unit....

While Google's services are FREE and I've never paid Google a single penny, you paid money to Garmin....

well said

if everybody was reading the fine print, it would came up that hooks and strings are attached to every PAID service/product we use. funny eh?

and with Google at least we do NOT have to pay ANYTHING on top of those strings and hooks (that everybody uses).

Whatever anybody can say about Google, they are actually the best (both price and quality wise) in what they do.

Garmin nuvi 2595LMT; Android 5.0 (Samsung GS3)

Great info. Some people are

Great info. Some people are just anti-smartphone / anti-Google / anti-innovation no matter what.

I don't trust Garmin any more than I do Google. At least Google is up front about how my data is used, and I can control it via the Google profile.

Silence.....

I have submitted two letters to Garmin (one via email and one via snail-mail) asking for clarification on what exactly they do with the information that they gather on me when I use my Nuvi 765T.

Specifically, I asked:

1. What information is gathered?
2. How/where is that data stored
3. Has Garmin (or does Garmin intend to) sell my information/data in a similar fashion to what Tom Tom did.
4. How do I opt-out from sending Garmin any of the data that is generated every time I use my Garmin GPS.

It has been over a month since both letters were written and I have yet to receive a response from Garmin. I will write them one more time this week, and if no response is forthcoming I will have my attorney send them a formal request for this information.
