Apple folds

Apple blocks new DUI checkpoint apps

Responding to pressure from four U.S. senators, Apple Inc. has banned any new mobile device applications that provide locations of police drunk-driving checkpoints when that information has not been published by the police themselves.

Somehow I doubt that people

Somehow I doubt that people who drink heavily & frequently are the type to organize POI's on Drunk Driving Enforcement Areas!

Won't make a difference

Florida is a right to know state.
In Pasco County the police post the location of DUI inspection stops in advance (radio, TV and papers)
Doesn't make a difference, they still do a pickup (pardon the pun) business every weekend.
You can see the setup well in advance and the drunks and druggies still go right to them.
God bless stupidity!

You mean "apps", and there's plenty.

More properly, it would be "apps" (as in plural), and there are a lot of them for Android (the one I've personally found most useful is Cab4Me, but there are others that are more specialised for major cities as well; I know of no less than fifteen separate apps on the Android Market that will look up cab services and even call for you).

Also, at least one free liquor-store locator and bartending program for Android (Liquor Run Mobile) actually has a "Safe Ride" section where you can look up a cab service and call, but also locate other services to provide a safe ride home (including concierge services who will ride up to your bar in a foldable scooter, pack the scooter in your trunk, drive you home safe, and drive to their next run).

All of these, of note, have either direct iPhone ports or iPhone app equivalents. grin

DUI App Not Needed in Ohio

DUI apps aren't needed in Ohio -- they publish on TV, the Radio, and Newspapers where DUI checks are going to be the next day, and the times they will operate. If people still get caught in one of the DUI checks, the deserve it -- not just because they are endangering other people, but because they are too stupid to heed the published warnings.

Many years ago

I saw a sign announcing "DUI Check Point ahead". Several people started getting off of the highway to avoid it. Well turns out they had on at the bottom of the ramp.

They place those signs so that there is no way you can avoid the check point.

Nope, not kidding! They had one last night near the mall, and it was announced ahead of time with the location and times. This morning the police reported that they issued 8 citations for OVI, 3 for seatbelt violations, and 4 for driving with a suspended license. One of the OVI arrests has had 8 prior arrests for the same charge!

Yep, the gene pool could use some chorline....

You are correct..

As someone stated to me one time..when you start to drink the first thing to go is your common sense. Once that's gone everything is fair game.
Stupid politicians pandering to the public when the end game is almost meaningless and they know it.
I'm sure the apps saved a select few but 99% of the
people who are over the limit don't relize the end is near till it's too late
As has been stated some cities, counties and states tell everyone where they'll be and it makes very little difference. Knowledge in the hands of fools makes them no smarter than they are.

Huh? Because they won't let an App on their AppStore that helps you drive drunk and avoid a checkpoint you're mad at Apple?

I was being a wiseass... Now I know better.... With all this at people's finger tips, they still manage to get caught driving drunk. Guess a few hours of debauchery overpower countless years of legal and fiscal crap... It's all about the priorities. (ME!! Want it NOW!!)
