1450 vs 1490 icons on map

I just got a 1450 for my brother in law. I have a 1490.

I noticed that the icons (Map Symbols) for favorites show up on the map on my 1490, but the icons (which show up in the "press for more" area, and which I can add by using the edit function) only show up as black dots on the map on the 1450.

Since my 1490 displays these icons/Mpa Symbols, I thought they would show up on the 1450.

I tried increasing map detail, and looking around in the settings, but no matter what, in the map view, the icons are only represented by black dots.

Is there some way to get the dots to change to icons?

This is not a big deal, but I am curious.

1490 Too

Apparently the firmware on your 1490 is not up to date. I have the latest updates and I have the black dots. Maybe it will get fixed someday.

My 1490 is OK

But MY 1490 does display the "map Symbols," unlike the 1450 which displays the black dots instead.

Both of them were updated to the latest maps and firmware.

Something in the configuration may be corrupted, or not set right, on the 1450, I think.

Just dots for favorites

Mine just shows dots for my favorites. It does show other icons in less than 200-300 feet. I did a hard reset and it did not change. There have been other discussions on this subject.

Test Drive

I just did a "test drive" with the 1450. The "favorites" icons are black dots, but as you indicated, the other "default" icons show up when zoomed in.

Oddly, my 1490 shows the favorites icons, but not the default ones!

If this were MS Flight Simulator, there would be a check box somewhere to fix this, or a .cfg file that could be altered! But it isn't Flight Simulator!

LATER EDIT: As inspector Clouseau would say, "the case is solved." Although both the 1450 and 1490 have the same 2011.4 maps, the 1490 has 5.1 firmware and the 1450 has 5.3 firmware. If I update the 1490 firmware, they should be the same. I'll try it and find out.

Just a thought

I would try, going to the map data layout screen and select more data.

Updated the firmware

I updated the firmware so both units have the 5.3 version, and now they both treat the Map Symbols/Icons the same.

"Map detail" is set at maximum for both units.

Changing the map to "more data" gives me three boxes for data like "time to destination, distance to destination, elevation, etc.," but does not change the way the default or favorite Map Symbols are displayed.

1450 vs 1490 icons on map

I have the 1490 LMT with all of the updates and it is working fine. I love this GPS, now that I customized it to my liking...

Mine also shows just the

Mine also shows just the dots.

. . .

As long as you can connect the dots, you should be good to go. wink

I just got a new 1490 and

I just got a new 1490 and right away updated the firmware......and the POI icon dose not show on map display...and yes I have more data selected. I also have the 1450 and just have the firmware updated also, but have not check if the icon display with the latest version of the firmware. If Garmin do away with the icon display, then why bother do have them selectable? Might as well delete them all. Some bit head was not thinking right. We need to tell Garmin to put the icon display back on!

Favorite Icons

Any word from Garmin when they will fix the icon display bug on 14xx models? Or have they given up on these models?

I was told by Garmin support

I was told by Garmin support this was a feature not a bug since too many people complained about the map being cluttered up by too many icons.

I asked could Garmin please make the resolution to display icons configurable? My Garmin III from 1997 that still works great after a lithium battery replacement currently has this feature. I was told by Garmin support No.

Favorite Icons Pointless

So, why do Favorites have icons associated with them. They are totally pointless now! Garmin has sure been making some stupid decisions lately. With that type of support Garmin will soon be irrelevant.

Will they show up under "GO"

Not limited to 14xx

I replaced my 1490 with a 1390 and the Favorites still show up as grey squares. I guess that confirms that Garmin has made this bug a feature (unless the 13xx use the same firmware as the 14xx).

Grey squares

Ugh, I hate the grey squares. Makes the favorites completely useless.

The 13xx and 14xx units use the same firmware.

I read on another forum that a Garmin fix for the favourites problem is in the testing stage (no exact ETA), and the newest 13xx units are shipping with FW 5.50 (which is not yet available on the Garmin website).
