Installing POI Icon Problem

I just downloaded a few POI icons from the POI Factory and am pretty sure I followed the instructions on the site to install them on my gps, however no icon shows on the screen for the location when I map to it. Am I doing something wrong or am I expecting something to happen before it should be happening? I have done this on both a 1390 and a 1490. The locations show, but no special icon. Thanks for any input.

Did you

Did you follow instructions from this site?

Name the bmp, and wav files same as POI file except for extension.

After upload to gps simulate route to nearby POI but zoom in to 300 feet to see icon.

Do they show at 200 ft?

On most units you need to be zoomed in to 200 ft or less to see the icon.

Resolution

Also, the bmp files should be 8 bit ( 256 colors) resolution.

I downloaded the files from this site, renamed them and followed the instructions closely. I did a route simulation to the poi but did not zoom in to 200 ft, so I will try that. Is this zoom level the only time you will be able to see the icon? I didn't know if they would show up anywhere else. Thanks for the help.

2 usual problems

If you map to it and zoom in to 200 ft what do you see? If you see a dot then most likely the icon is not going to show.

Problem 1
If the name is the exact same (except for the extension) and in the same directory then PoiLoader should have seen it.

Problem 2
It is probably too high a color resolution. I have downloaded many bmp icon files from here that needed to have the color resolution reduced. I can only guess that some older GPSs and other manufacturers allowed the higher resolution. Many of the current Garmins will only show the 8 bit icons. So PoiLoader may have done everything right but the GPS can't display it.

If your using a Windows PC right click on the bmp file to get the Properties and see what its resolution is. You can use many different programs to fix the color depth.

I zoomed in all the way and

I zoomed in all the way and although other poi icons show, the downloaded ones do not, either on the computer or either Garmin device. I guess they just won't, and I am ok with that. I just did it for fun.

You should see them if you zoomed in.Did you name the icon file the same as the custom poi except the extensions? The best way to check is select one of your custom pois with icons on the gps.Right before you select go look at the bottom of the screen.Touch map and see if it shows.

What do you mean

by "the downloaded ones do not, either on the computer".
You should be able to view them on the computer. They will be very tiny though.
