Mobile phone gps units

I would be really interested to hear about peoples experiences with the mobile phone GPS units. How well do they work and are they easy to use? Do you like them better then the standard units?

Are you looking for experiences with the Bluetooth units connecting with the phones or are there actually GPS units with there own built in phones?

Mobile phone GPS unit

I am currently using a Garmin c550 with my Samsung d357 bluetooth phone. I have a power outlet in my Jeep that turns on and off with the main ignition system. When I start the Jeep, the unit automatically comes on and connects with my phone. When I shut the Jeep off, the GPS gives me the option to let it stay on, or it counts down from 30 and shuts itself off.

So far, it works pretty good. I don't have to do anything to connect my phone to the GPS (except for the initial setup). This makes it really easy to stay "Hands Free", especially in NY.

When a call comes in, I am given a choice on the unit to either ignore it or answer it. The c550 has two speakers on the back that make it pretty easy to hear the person you are talking to. It also has a external speaker jack in the back of the unit. This makes it easy to connect it to an external speaker, or even you car stereo. It has a small mic on the front bottom of the unit. This also has plug in option for an external microphone. I typically only use the mic on the front of the unit.

I had originally used the window mount in the bottom center of the front windshield. Most people had said that I sound like I am in a wind tunnel or they hear a slight echo when I talk. I then purchased the dash mount and have moved it closer to me, to the center front of the dash. Everyone tells me that I sound clearer and have lost the echo.

I really like the ability to just hit the call button on the screen to make phone calls to anyone in my favorites, or that has a listing in the food, lodging, and shopping directory. It also gives me the option to dial anyone in my phone's directory using voice commands or by selecting it on screen. I am still working on speaking correctly in order to get it to do what I want it to do. I think I may be trying to speak too loud or soft for it to work properly every time. When I am done with a call, I simply select the phone icon on the map and push the end call button.

Hope this helps. I'll post some more updates on it as I use it more.

Best regards,
