Adding Maps to Garmin Nuvi

I thought there was a thread somewhere on this site regarding how to add maps to your Garmin, but cannot find it. I have downloaded a map file (.img) for use in Batam, Indonesia, where I am going to visit this coming June. The author's instructions were to copy the file to the garmin directory, but this doesn't cause the map to be displayed in my unit. What do I need to do to add this map so I can view/use it in my Nuvi?

Particularly, read the comment in the thread from gdfaini:

That happened to me the first time also. Make sure you put the file gmapbmap.img in a folder named "garmin" on the SD card. Rename the file gmapsupp.img so the GPSr knows it is a map supplement.

good to know it works

Good to know this works, as I will have a trip to Japan soon. I do not have too much time to find map working for my nuvi, but, think will give a try.
