Multiple Maps in one SD Card?

Is it possible to use multiple maps in 1 SD card?
My Garmin preinstalled with N. America 2009 map and I recently purchased Europe map 2009 Map update (installed in SD card) and in additon, I have Malaysia-Singapore Garmin map.
Now both Europe map and Singapore map want to reside in X:\Garmin with filename: gmapsupp.img

I have tried renaming either of the files but it's no use.

TIA,
Mercurius

No, you can only have one gmapsupp.img file on the card.

However, the unit will recognize a supplemental map on the unit as well as on the card so you could load them to the unit.

However, I have a question for you. Is the Europe (or the Malaysia) map on a preloaded Garmin SD card or did you load the maps to the card yourself?

If the card(s) are preloaded Garmin cards, then you can't load ANY other data onto the card. And if you accidentally damage the data while doing so, that is not covered by the warranty so be careful.

Now, if BOTH maps exist in MapSource on your computer, then you can load both to the same mapset by simply selecting the map tiles from each map product and sending them to the card at the same time.

.

In addition to what Motorcycle Mama posted, you may want to have a look at this topic I started a while back.

You can put other maps on the SD Card but the mapset itself needs to be rebuilt using MapSource to include the maps you wish to add along with the existing maps already on the card. To do this, you need to have all the maps you wish to include in the new mapset installed and accessible in MapSource. This is assuming the mapset already on the card is NOT Garmin pre-loaded data. As has been mentioned, you can have only one mapset file (gmapsupp.img) on the SD card but can have multiple mapset files on the nuvi drive itself. This is explained in the guide I linked to in my above post.

Mexico and US

Interesting, I always wanted Mexico along with my US and Canada maps but could never find a combo map anywhere. Not a huge deal, but I would like to have my Garmin working if I ever make it back down to Rocky Point. smile

Other tools...

There's a map 'splitting and merging' tool here:

and a GUI for it:

This site is just full of information Thanks!!!!!!

So by selecting both N.

So by selecting both N. America map and Europe in Mapsource, I can combine and upload them to Garmin unit as 1 map, is that correct?

Yes

If you are using mapsource... and have enough memory

edit: you could also add any other maps you may have... i.e. Mexico, Australia, etc

If Mapsource can combine the maps, why do I need GMapTool? I also found MapSetToolKIt on web. Can you explain what it does?

GMAPTOOL can combine maps for which you only have the GMAPSUPP.IMG. Mapsource expects all the consituent maps and previews as separate files.

From what I can remember (it's been a while since I looked at it), GMAPTOOL can just take two GMAPSUPP.IMG files and combine them into a new one.

It Depends

For Nuvi, it seems to support 3 maps, one is the base map (GMAPBMAP.img) and the other is the rom version within the unit (GMAPPROM.img), the last is the SD version (GMAPSUPP.img).

For the Garmin XT, it actually can support 4 maps. In addition to the normal 3 above, it can support a forth one (GMAPSUP2.img).

Please note that the map file name is fixed for all Garmin software.

Merging Maps

Gmaptool did merge my Europe and Canada map but they don't load together on my etrex vista even with a 2 gb micro sd card.

Were you sure not to have more than 2025 map segments in the mapset?

I have 4G SD card and am

I have 4G SD card and am ready to try to merge the maps this weekend smile

I've read somewhere that Garmin can only support up to 4G, is that correct?

i have

16gb in mine and reads it

.

Typically, Garmin GPS units have been reported to no be able to read a map file that is much bigger than 2GB. Also, other than the Oregon and Colorado, there is a 2025 map segment limit per mapset.

For the nuvis, there is officially no limit to the size SD card that the unit will read.

Multiple Maps

I can get Canada or Europe alone but combined they don't work. Where would I see the map segments? Adding Canada should only add 12 segments if each province is a map segment.

In MapSource under the Maps tab on the left side of the program window, you will see the map segments that are selected.

Select Canada/ North America

in mapsource's product select window. Then select the map tool, Set the view to about 700 miles, If you want to select all of North America point to top right corner, while pressing the right mouse button drag down to bottom left corner. (Or you can individually select areas you are interested in). Next select the Europe map in the select product window, do the same procedure. North America and Europe have 248 maps the size is 2341.6 MB. So you need at least a 4MB sd card. I have done this so I know it works... I have added Mexico and Australia along with of NA and Europe without a problem... Just be prepared for a long wait while assembling and loading the maps…. I have tried to load the entire US topo map but that doesn’t seem to work, I think there are to many maps, they loaded to the card but the nuvi didn’t seem to be able to handle the information… As MM said you meet a limit at around 2000 maps or so…
