What Else Can Be in Extras?

I haven't ever seen anything else other than the one line 'Custom POIs' under the 'Where To? - Extras' icon.

Anybody know what else can show up here and how it gets there or is it just a wasted step to get to the POIs?

?

Extras are only for POI's. I'm not aware of anything else can be placed there.

What are you thinking of doing?

Not really thinking

of doing anything. It has just been bugging me that we all like to have as few steps as possible when navigating the menu systems on our GPSs, and here GARMIN added 1 for no reason that I can see as of now. Why don't they rename Extras to Custom POIs and go directly to them , skipping 1 step. Unless there are some other kind of Extras that none of us are aware of.

Its a slow rainy day here so I don't have anything else to ponder at the time.

There you go again...

Getting all logical, and stuff. Stop that! smile

Do Garmin's MAD Maps and Travel Guides appear under Extras?

http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/cache/offonce/us/extras/dow...

Extras

I believe one of my Garmins (360 or 660) has a "Fodors Travel Guide" in the extras that came with the unit.

Not sure about Mad Maps

The Mad Maps look like a combination of Custom Routes and Custom POIs. I guess the travel guides look like a possibility but I bet we would get more from POIs here. How old can some of their information be?

I guess I could ask GARMIN?
or
Does anyone out there have any Mad Maps or Travel Guides from GARMIN? If so, where do they show on the menu system and what folder(s) do the files load to? Do they display on the same page as 'Custom POIs' does?

Maybe we can figure out how to use another level of the menu system.

A Couple of options

Custom .gpi files built by Garmin's Content Toolkit put their entries at the same level as Custom POIs, but it's too expensive for Joe Average to purchase, imo ($500).

Check out TurboCCCs Extra POI Editor v 5.xx beta:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31703
Last time I checked it will create a .gpi file directly and put the menu on the same (Custom POIs) level. I haven't tried it but I think it can even put a custom icon in the menu at the same level as Extras.

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

That is great

I have the v5.xx beta but I haven't worked in that area yet. I was just testing the TourGuide distance save settings and provided some info back to Turbo.

I'll have to get into this next.

Thanks

Mad Map

I think I have a mad map that came with my system. It's a Route 66 and yes, it's in the Extras. Unfortunately every time I try to view it, it crashes the unit so I don't bother with it anymore.

From the Garmin Knowlege Base

"Question: What is the Extras Icon on my device?

Answer: The following extras are currently offered:

SAFETY CAMERA - You can turn your unit into a safety camera alert system. Using this service, you can download the locations of hundreds of safety cameras across the country. After you load the data, your unit alerts you when you are approaching a safety camera and can warn you if you are driving too fast.

SAVERS GUIDE - Savers Guide™ is a geo-coded coupon book that notifies you of nearby discounts on restaurants, hotels, shopping, and more at thousands of participating Entertainment® businesses throughout North America. Save 20% off dining, shopping, and services and up to 50% off at participating hotels.

TRAVEL GUIDE - Travel Guide™ gives you helpful and thorough reviews and recommendations for restaurants, hotels, shopping, nightlife, sporting events, and tourist attractions.

POI LOADER - With POI Loader, you can now add additional points of interest to your unit. You can upload custom POI's to supplement the nearly 6 million points of interest that are already in it. When you upload safety cameras or school zones, you will receive a warning if you are traveling too fast."

Never heard of Savers Guide or Travel Guide.

Short, and to the point

Forgive me, but I tend to hate this on a Monday morning. My brain is way too fuzzy at this point in time. But by all means do ignore my post smile

extra

I have a refurbished Zumo
It has the route 66 routes and poi in extra.
Nice little bonus.

Too late

Garmin site extras vs garmin nuvi WhereTo-Extras

Apparently not everything listed under “Extras” on the Garmin site will appear under Where To-Extras on a nuvi.

For example the Geocaches listed under {Garmin Extras>Services>Go Geocaching} here:

http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/cache/offonce/us/extras/ser...

wind up in the Where To-Favorites on my 255W.
