3790 & Red Light Camera Files

I have a 3790 and I know it has safety camera files. I think I would prefer to use the red light files on this site. My question, is if I download the red light file from this site how do I know my 3790 is actually using that file? Is there a way of disabling the Garmin safety camera files? Or is that necessary?

I own the 3790 and you can

I own the 3790 and you can use both files or disable the Garmin file in your options.
Click on tools, settings, navigation, automobile, proximity points, alerts.

Thank you...that is exactly

Thank you...that is exactly what I needed to know.

3790 & Red Light Camera Files

What would happen if you used both?

.

You might get double warnings in some areas.

3790 & Red Light and photo Camera Files

OK, so I installed both files and did a simulation trip past one and it sounds ding-ding. How can I replace that alert with one that peaks 'photo radar ahead" and red light camera ahead or something like that. I saw some mp3 and wave files that I like here but what to do with them? Any help appreciated.

Before you load the file and create the poi, set up a folder labeled (such as) cameras. In the folder put the files.

Red Light Cameras.csv
Red Light Cameras.bmp
Red Light Cameras.mp3

The file names need to be exactly the same except for the extensions

I don't think that the 3790 have mp3 player.

True, but

What this means is that one has to use a .wav file named Red Light Cameras.wav instead of the Red Light Cameras.mp3 suggested by pwohlrab,

AND

one must have sox.exe in the same folder as POILoader. get it at

Voice alerts

See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 .You will need to install sox.exe and use wav files for your unit to do voice alerts.Install sox.exe on computer in the same location that Poiloader is located.

How about Quadruple

You get them anyways. If i am traveling slowly towards a red light i'll get 3 warnings and 1 warning after i crossed the inter section. It's set to 100 meters. Tried 80, but that's a bit too close.

Multiple files give multiple alerts

For 1 file you will get multiple bongs or voice alert.
If you have 2 red light files then you will get warnings (bongs or voice) from both files. That is what Juggernaut is referring to.

Point was: the more you have, the more bongs you get. Might even make you Bonkers laugh out loud

Thank you. Here is another problem. I backed up my 3790 a couple of weeks ago. IE, I changed my folder options to see all files including operation system files and then copied all the Garmin files to a folder called Garmin backup 7-1-11 on my computer. Next , I downloaded the 2 photo and red light files from here. I installed POI Loader. I also have a Sandisk 8 gig mini SDHC card that I then plugged into my Garmin. I wanted to use it as the place to put the files. When I ran POI Loader I didn't know that you had to tell it to put the files on your computer and then tell it the Sandisk and instead told it to put it on the Garmin which it did. That is not how I would like it. What steps exactly to remove what files where to get then all off the Garmin and then install correctly onto the memory card.

How would you have 2 red light files on there? Is there duplicate entries in the files downloaded here?

I use POI Factory plus also Trapster csv files

so, I also get two warnings for every red light camera - but it is OK.

Use POI Loader

You are commended because you did the backup.

One of the options of POILoader (it is on the 4th screen you encounter) is to "Remove all previously installed custom POIs from your device".

Just let it do that and you will be back to where you started.

The safety camera file that comes with the 3790 is only a sampling of their subscription service safety camera file.

Thank you so much. That was easy.

When using POI Loader for the speed camera file what are most folks using for alert settings? Express or manual? What is the proximity on express? I was thinking of going manual and set it to 300 Feet but maybe it is already set to that in express.

OK. I went ahead and used the express method. I then simulated a trip past a speed camera location to test the speed camera voice alert wav I downloaded to use in place of the dink sound. It is named the exact same as the csv file in the same directory and it still dinks and no voice alert. Can anyone suggest anything?

RE: 3790 & Red Light Camera Files

You are using a WAV file and have SOX don't you?

Oh, the default distance is 1/4 mile or 400 meters.

Yes I have Sox and the wav file.

Alerts

The biggest problems with the alerts and icons not working are the files not being named the same except for extensions and having double extensions. Double-check each of them. The best way to prevent double extensions is to go to your folder options in the control panel and click view then find hide extensions for known file types and remove the check mark. Click OK.This is for XP.Make sure you also have the correct sox.exe and it is located in the same location as poiloader. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 it has the sox.exe that works.

600 ft

Trilliby,

I use 600 feet for proximity alerts.

Others may use longer distances.

Is it worth buying the Garmin camera alerts

Is it worth buying the safety camera updates. I have a 3970 LMT.

depends

If you are not going to be active here or support the site by purchasing the factory's camera database, then yes. If you like the support you receive from here, then pay Jon for access.

Thanks. I think that this will lead me to another question. I had better create a separate thread for this one.
