Semi-Permanent or temporary Installation

I'm wondering how much in the minority I may be. I have installations in my two vehicles, a BMW 128i convertible and a Suzuki Grand Vitara SUV that I call semi-permanent. BMW sells accessory portable GPSs that are rebranded Garmins. I bought one of their installation kits and a Garmin and installed it. It sits to the right of the instruments. I have a Garmin accessory microphone for the bluetooth and a cord into the headphone socket to take the output to the aux port. The power cord is buried in the dash. I can still remove the GPS, and I do when I take it for service or leave it at the airport but normally the 885t is there when I drive the car.

I had to get a little more creative with the Suzuki but I put my 760 just to the right of the main guages and to the left of the mpg meter in the center of the dash. The Garmin mount is a custom fixture screwed to a cherry wood block that is fastened to the dash with silicone caulk. Again the wires are in the dash and largely hidden.

My question is, how many of you have installations like this where the wiring is part of the vehicle?

Jim

Not yet but

Not yet, but I was just yesterday thinking of doing that. I was waiting for someone and had my 295W in my pocket (using it as an appointment calendar!) and experimenting with where I could get it to sit (on it's own) up by the instrument cluster.

I'd be curious to hear the details if others have been creative with modifying mounts for that, like you did.

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

installations

I use my Garmin in several vehicles including personal and work vehicles. I use the suction cup mount all the time.

temporary too

I also have a suction cup mount, power cord, and accessory (sound) cord with cradles for both nuvis that I use in rental cars when traveling.

hard wired

My 680 (on a Kuda mount) is hard wired so it powers up and down with the ignition. The power/data cable is visible for about two inches from the mount, and then it disappears into the dash.

Nice thing about the Kuda mount in the Mini is that the GPS is at a pretty much perfect position -- I can hit the screen with the fingers of my right hand without taking my hand from the steering wheel.

That mount also provides a convenient place to hang a baseball cap when I park the car. That's my usual dance to cover the GPS.

Garmin in the 128i

I have a 128i convertible as well. I am waffling between going with the Proclip adapter and the BMW/Garmin wiring harness kit. Did you install yours yourself or get the dealer to do it? The nice thing with Proclip is it is reversible and the Garmin mount works on most units easily. I don't do the bluetooth because I have the BMW assist. I do have thre Garmin gpses, and want to be able to switch between them in the car.

Garminfone (Android) Colorado 300 NUVI 550 NUVIFone M20

Garmin and Droid in several places.

In the Civic it is portable only, lighter power and suction cup on the windshield with either the N260W or the Googlephone. It is the preferred medium trip car. Both work real well.

The Aged ALCR (looks like a Neon, but it sure is not) has had a mount for the GPSV stuck on with 3m removable foam for about a dozen years (it may not be removable now) and has installed power and external antenna lead that come out from under the IP top cover. The antenna is magnetic and is on the truck lid and has been forever. I count on it to be a fast and accurate speedometer.

The tracker/towd gets to use the suction cup mount and a lighter plug for either the Droid or the D260w depending on the situation and just how I feel at that time. Droid's GPS is good, but the maps get weird and slow when you are out of 3G coverage.

Our antique GMC motorhome has the flat disk for stick the G260W mount on the top of the instrument cluster and power is from a cable hidden under the clusters back cover. Anybody's bet where the laptop/Delorme and the Droid end up at any given time. They power from one of the "lighter" sockets when required.

I have the BMW Garmin Nuvi

I have the BMW Garmin Nuvi 360, you're right it's rebranded Nuvi 360 but it does come with custom cars, they're 328's and 335's in different colors and some details such as BMW dealer and service locator buttons.

There are limitations tho, they locked the firmware so it cannot be updated past verison 2.40

What the heck, I got it for half price.

I'm in favor of Temporary Solution

And time permitting, they often become permanent smile

Jokes aside, I wouldn't want to do a permanent wiring in my car. It'd be a hint for potential burglars that I have a GPS in my car, for one. I don't intend to keep the same car all my life either. And finally, I never know which car I might be needing my GPS for - my beloved wife's, our daughter's, a rental ? So I have the non-skid Garmin holder, and it works absolutely fine for me.

Ain't nuthin' never just right to do the things you wanna do when you wanna do them, so you best just go ahead and do them anyway ! (Rancid Crabtree, from Pat F McManus fame)

680 wired to switchable fuse post

In my Honda Ridgeline.

Using ProClip center mount with vertical extension for improved visibility. The cradle is powered so my nuvi is auto on/off with the truck. I snaked the ac wiring thru vent opening in dashboard (behind the proclip mount) so no unsightly dangling wires.

Same here...and mounting the Garmin in the vehicle subjects it to all sorts of extreme heat around here.

sandbag

I would rather just use my sandbag mount, much easier. If it ain't broke I don't try to fix it.
