Customizable Maps?

Is there anyway to customize a Garmin map? For instance, there is a local bridge that is one of the main traffic arteries in our area. The bridge is under construction for the next 2 years. How can I customize my map so that this bridge is avoided and routes are properly calculated? I have contacted Garmin and Navteq multiple times about this bridge closing, but have received no response from either party. Therefore, I have no idea if they are working to show this bridge as closed for the next 2 years.

.

Nope, no way to customize Garmin maps.

If you report the closure it may show up in a future map update in a year or two. Of course by then the bridge will be open again!

Custom Avoidances

It's the one thing TomTom can do that Garmin can't. On TomToms, you can mark a section of a road as an avoidance.

Good Feature from TomTom

This is a good feature provided by TomTom. Since TomTom can do this, it appears that Garmin would implement the feature, too. It sure would be nice.

Some Garmins can

My nuvi 855 does allow for custom avoidances. I think I can avoid areas of specific streets and selected rectangles of area if I remember correctly from the time I tested the option. I presume that all the 8x5 and maybe 8xx nuvis can do the same.

What function avoids areas?

How do you setup to avoid areas with your Garmin? Maybe it works with mine, too.

For the nuvi 855, look to page 45 of the manual:
