Map Updates & Custom POI's

Okay, I have a dilemma... First a little background: I am using a Kenwood DNX8120 in-dash multimedia unit with Garmin map interface. The built-in map is 2009 so earlier this year I updated to 2010 map. It came as an SD card that I cannot load in to the unit, the SD card has to stay in the machine to load and read the updated map data.

Now comes the problem... I have custom poi's that I have loaded on to an SD card via Garmin POI Loader. All went well but the resulting file is too large to save to the Kenwood memory. Now I can plug in the custom poi SD card to see all my lovely custom poi's, but 2009 map data, or visa versa, load my 2010 maps and not have any custom poi's.

I don't really want to reduce the amount of and thus file size of my custom poi's as I travel extensively with my job and like to have them all. Is there a way to load both the updated map data and custom poi's on to one SD card? Anyone have the same problem as I? Any help appreciated, thanks!

both should be able to be on the same sd card

I load the map updates onto my garmin and all my poi files are on an SD card. I don't see why you can't have both the update and the poi files on the same sd card. Hopefully the poi files will fit on the sd card with the sd card with the map updates. Is the sd card with the updates large enough to hold both?

I would

I would check to see how much room is left on the SD card with the map and then would check the other SD card that has the poi.gpi file on it to see what the size of the gpi file is.
That will tell you if there is room.

It Worked!

Yay, it worked! I was concerned that doing any editing to the map SD card might render it locked or something but I was able to use the POI Loader and loaded my points of interest to the Map SD card. (it's a 2GB card, I had barely enough room, but made it) Plugged in to the receiver and everything reads. Map is updated and all my POI's are showing. Thanks everyone!

How many custom POI's are you loading?

I have the built-in Kenwood KVT-516 Head Unit with the KNA G610 Kenwood/Garmin Navigation module and it has 4GB of memory. I Have no problem with the main map plus a supplemental map and the custom POI's fitting without using the SD card and I still have tons of memory left free in the GPS unit.

Internal Memory - Big Secret...

I have no idea what the size of internal memory is on the unit. I have scoured my manuals and google and have come up blank. It appears to be a well kept secret, or at least from me. I'm only loading about 70,000 POI's, the .gpi file ends up at around 6MB. It just won't load to the internal memory. If I drop the amount of POI's, it saves fine. Oh well.

I load about 7.5 MB custom POI file using SD card

I load about 7.5 MB custom POI file using SD card. Try going to the data area in the service menu and select delete all custom POI's first and then insert the SD card and follow prompts to load them into the units memory.

If you connect to the USB port on the unit with a laptop you will see the unit as a drive and you will be able to get the size and see all the files and directories. That's how I have loaded additional vehicles, supplemental maps and update to the latest map directly into the units memory instead of having to use a SD map card.

I even did a complete backup to my laptop of the Kenwood/Garmin unit when I first installed it just in case I needed to restore anything.

Thanks

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

Larger Card

I would purchase a larger capacity SD card; (8MB) approx. $12, and load everything to that card and use it as a backup just in case.

canadianation needs to have the maps on the card in order to use the updated maps. Moving the maps to another card may render it worthless.

Yup. That's exactly what happened. I tried moving the maps from the purchased update card and they became locked. Had to keep the map card and move the poi's to that one.
