Seeing POIs

On the Nuvi 295w, I haven't been able to see POIs on the maps until I am zoomed in to 200ft and 120ft. Is this the case for other 295 users? What about the other Garmins? Thanks

All units the same

All units the same until you get close to end destination or use the zoom tab.You may want to look through this http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/index.html .Some tricks for icons etc.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. I had the Garmin iQue 3200 before and I'm pretty sure it showed the icons from farther away. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing anything.

That site you linked to was pretty good. Most of that stuff I already know. A GPS newbie I am not! That doesn't mean there aren't things I have missed!

There is one way to see

There is one way to see custom pois on the screen without zooming in - install them in tourguide mode. Also if you use 2d view you will see POIs on the screen without zooming.

Pardon My Ignorance

How does one use tour guide mode?

If I want to have Pois

If I want to have Pois visible on my nuvi ,in all zoom level on the navigation map I use 199 kmh (124 mph)speed alert, and set the proximity for the distance I want them to pop up.You should not get an alarm before your speed is 189 kmh (117 mph).
But your ikon will show at the proximity distance.
The speed alarm must be max 199 kmh (124 mph).
200 kmh /125 mph do not work.
You will only se pois along the road/route.

TourGuide

If you put TourGuide in the file name you will get a radius alert instead of a along the route alert. The more distance you set the larger the radius. You have to put TourGuide along with the other files you tie to it.Example.

My Pois
TourGuide Cracker Barrel.csv
TourGuide Cracker Barrel.bmp
TourGuide Cracker Barrel.wav

You may want to build you alert distance in using gpx files.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/28521 .That way you can run poiloader in express mode instead of manual.See this post for some good info http://www.poi-factory.com/node/13958

Nice

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check that out! Do you or anyone else know if that works with the 295w (before I try it)?

Yes, I use TourGuides with the Schools POI file to get an audio and visual alert when within 550 feet of schools--sort of a "school zone" warning. The 295w works just like my 750 and 855 and responds as expected.

Will be checking it out

Thanks! I will be checking that out most definitely. I must say that this forum has proven very helpful. I enjoy visiting often!
