I am looking for custom voices for 255W

can you help direct?

I am looking for custom voices for my Nuvi 255W

See beginning of thread?

JLH,

As previously posted in this thread (page 1) go to Garmin's site and download Webupdater. When you run the program with your GPS attached to the computer it'll show you available voices that aren't already loaded in your GPS. Most will be foreign languages.

There are also a couple of character voices available on Garmin's site: http://www8.garmin.com/vehicles/voices/

Cheers wink

You can modify your Garmin TTS voice files using this free software http://www.poi-factory.com/node/16263

Glad to of Found this discussion

I wanted to offer my opinion on the voice sites. I have talked to the owner of PIGtones http://www.1shoppingcart.com/app/?af=889835

(Which stands for politically incorrect voices) and they are going to be rolling out some great new voices soon. (Early 2009)
They are a company from the USA. The other company has some great celebrity voices but are pretty much limited to just that. I look forward to trying all the voices that are coming out. Hope this helps.

Some of the comments are a little strange this time of year, but for clear, consistent instructions it is hard to beat "Boris."

Buyer Beware!!!!

I bought a few voices from www.nav-voices.co.uk and had a horrible experience. You can only have 1 of the voices in the GPS unit at any given time, and it is a pain in the a** to switch the voices in & out. The instructions came only after I had made the purchase, and the company refused to give me a refund for the extra voices that are essentially useless to me. In addition, the voice I tried has limited functionality. I'd suggest staying away from this company.

I hve found that when I have been dissatisfied

With purchases made on the internet, my credit card company would remove the charges when I disputed them after making a request for a refund from the company...

Regarding the pigtones voices...they have some pretty cool stuff but you have to remember that they replace your "American English" voices....not like the Garmin voices that give you options to choose from.

Basic POI Loading Procedure Using WINDOWS

Following these instructions will allow you to load custom POI into your Garmin unit. These are VERY BASIC instructions and are intended as a process on how to load POI to the memory in your unit.

1. Download and install the latest version of POILoader from http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/.

2. Create a Folder to hold all your Custom POI. NOTE: I put my folder on my Desktop.

3. Download the desired POI files from POI Factory and put them into the folder created in Step 2.

4. Visit the Icon library and download the desired icons for your POI files and put them into the folder created in Step 2.

5. Visit the Sounds Library and download the desired sound files for your POI. NUVI 2XX units require WAV sound files. WAV files require you to install a sound conversion program called SOX. SOX.EXE can be downloaded from http://rapidshare.com:80/files/139638423/sox.zip. Unzip the folder containing the program SOX.EXE. Select the SOX.EXE file, right click and select COPY.

6. Using Windows Explorer, go to C:\Program Files\Garmin. This must be the same folder that has the program POILoader.exe. Right click on any BLANK space in this folder. Select PASTE. SOX.EXE should now be copied to the folder. Check and be certain the folder contains BOTH POILoader.EXE and SOX.EXE.

7. If SOX.EXE is not copied to this folder, WAV sounds will not play.

8. Using Windows Explorer or another program, open the folder containing the files to be loaded into your NUVI.

9. Match the file name to the ICON file. Rename the ICON file so it has the same name as the POI file. POI files can be either CSV or GPX – it doesn’t matter. These file names must match exactly with the exception of the file extension. NOTE: there can only be one period in a file name. A period in a file name marks the beginning of the file extension. Icon file names can only end in BMP.

10. Match the file name to the SOUND file. Rename the SOUND file so it has the same name as the POI file. POI files can be either CSV or GPX – it doesn’t matter. These file names must match exactly with the exception of the file extension. NOTE: there can only be one period in a file name. A period in a file name marks the beginning of the file extension. Sound file names can only end in MP3 or WAV. NOTE: Using WAV files requires another program not found on POI-Factory.

11. Connect your NUVI to your computer using the USB cable. Wait for the NUVI to show it is connected and ready to receive files (Black screen with an ICON at the bottom showing it is connected to the computer.)

12. Run POILoader.

13. Select Garmin Device as Where to save your Points of Interest.

14. Press Next and wait for the program to find your NUVI. The NUVI will be shown in the box labeled Device:.

15. Press Next. The program will ask the location of the files to be loaded. Use the BROWSE button and select the FOLDER containing the POI, ICON, and SOUND (Alert) files.

16. Select the measurement units used for your NUVI. Feet and Miles per hour or Meters and Kilometers.

17. The NUVI suggests running the program in Automatic. For BASIC file loading, this is sufficient. NOTE: The only two alert sounds that will play automatically are for Red light and Speed cameras. For other alert sounds to play, you must select MANUAL and set either a distance or speed alert trigger. NOTE: If a file name contains ANY number, POILoader will assume it is a speed alert and play the sound file for that POI automatically. Press Next.

18. POILoader will begin to convert the POI files, ICONs and ALERT sounds and load them to your NUVI. If POILoader encounters an error with a source file, it will tell you the name of the file POI file containing an error. When finished, POILoader will tell you the number of POI successfully loaded to your NUVI.

NOTE: Every time you run POILoader, it will overwrite the previous output file and you will loose any POI not contained in your source folder.

19. Disconnect your NUVI using the Stop or Eject USB device.

20. Power up the NUVI and select WHERE TO -> EXTRAS and see if CUSTOM POI is displayed. Press CUSTOM POI and you should see a list of all the POI loaded.

TROUBLESHOOTING:

21. If you do not see a custom icon or hear the custom alert sound for a Custom POI that successfully loaded, it is most likely because you have a double file extension (two periods in one or more of the file names.)

22. Open Windows Explorer. Select TOOLS. Select Folder Options. Select VIEW. Under FILES AND FOLDERS uncheck the box that states: Hide extensions for known file types.

23. Using Windows Explorer, open the FOLDER containing the custom POI files, icons, and alert files. Verify each file name has only ONE period just before the 3 character file extension. Rename any files containing more than one period so the file contains only ONE period.

24. Restart this procedure at Step 9.

Repeat as necessary.

Nuvi 850

I have a nuvi 850 so I beleive that the voice files have to have a ext of .mp3 is this correct? I changed the voice files to the exact name of the poi files except for the ext ie .mp3. And I still get the "bong" insted of the voice I have installed. Is there something im doing wrong? Thanks for the help.

Voice files?

You changed what? A voice file gives directions such as "Turn right."

An alert sound is a short file that provides a SHORT message about a POI. An alert does not have to be a spoken message, it can be a sound such as a fog horn or snippet of music but they only last for a few seconds.

Go back to the long post and reread steps 9 and 10.

WAV files work

I'm using .wav files instead of .mp3 files with my .csv files...and it's working ok for me. It took a bit of help with my sox.exe file, but it's all good.

I get a cute "Starbucks coffee ahead!" whenever I'm within a mile of a Starbucks.

I'm using a nuvi 260w.

British Voices

The only problem with British Voices is that they are conditioned to British Roads. In other words, they will call Hwy as HW, not Highway. In the UK their called Motorways.

I would suspect SR for State Road will just be SR.

If you don;t mind that, go for it.

Not sure

Not sure which voice it was, either the British or Australian voice, but instead of it saying "take ramp" it tells you to "take slip". smile

Using an older British voice

Using an older British voice will correct the issue. I think anything below 1.50 does not have the problem.

New Voices

There are Halloween and Christmas voices on Garmin's website

I wish there were more but those are the only two I know of.

Elfred is cute, he is one of Santa's elves

Red light Cameras Voices

Well thanks for the info. i guess you do learn something new everyday, am gonna try this tomorrow i haven't though of voice yet for the red light cameras am sure al find something cool and unique.

Specifics on Garmin 660

I'm not clear on the why's and wherefore's......
Regarding a Garmin 660 and changing a voice...

So If I elect to change the voice... say one I purchase from Pigtones...
Do I have to use custom software to upload it, or can I just copy it and paste the file in the appropriate folder?

I see two different sets of instruction videos at pigtones.....

And am I to understand that this over-writes the American English selection, so I can only have one loaded at a time?

Thanks Jan

I have my 660 on, I see Presently I have Selected American English-Jack (TTS)

Above it, is American English

But would American English-Jack (TTS) Still be available for use afterward????

Thanks.... Jan
