I have created and uploaded a new file called "North Carolina Barbecue - Guides and Trails."
This is my first attempt at creating a POI file, and feedback would be appreciated.
There have been several guides to NC barbecue restaurants written over the years, and I have attempted to include most of the establishments still in existence. The Smithfield's BBQ 'N Chicken chain is also included in the mix.
I used Extra Poi Editor to create the file, and I'm currently working on a Guide for South Carolina Barbecue, as well.
Thank you for any comments or input you may have.
Can you post the link?
Link provided above.
You should post a link to the file.
Also, I was at the Carolina Smokehouse in Cashiers, NC in November. This should be on your list, it was a great place!!!!! I bought a couple jars of their sauce to bring home.
281 Highway 64 West
You are making me feel invisible:P
Look above, I posted the link silly.
Thank you for posting the link, miss poi.
I look forward to trying Carolina Smokehouse the next time I'm in Chashiers. I'll add at the next update.
It's all in the timing.
I tried to edit my original post to request the link, but I was denied permission, so I did another post requesting the link when I shared my smokehouse experience.
Between all that, you added the link and I never saw it.
Sorry 'bout that.
Thanks for this list!
I went to the Great Smoky Mountains area in early Nov 2010 for the first time and had plenty of Carolina BBQ while I was there. It was great!!! I wish I had this list when I went on the trip.
We plan on going to the Smokys and the Blue Ridge Parkway again sometime, perhaps less so in the deep off-season.
I went to several BBQ/smokehouses when I was down there, and the Carolina Smokehouse was really good. I just love places like that.
Carolina Smokehouse in Cashiers, NC (as a recommended site). Hog Heaven in Charlotte, NC was removed from the list due to an unfortunate closing of the business.
Kerley's Barbecue of Welcome, NC has been verified and added to the updated poi file.
Ya All are making me hungry!!
I just ordered 6 jars of sauce from The Carolina Smokehouse.
Some of the best BBQ's around
I just added The Pit Authentic BBQ of Raleigh, NC after watching Owner/Pit Master Ed Mitchell beat Bobby Flay in a "Rib Throwdown."
There is also location fix for Nunnery-Freeman BBQ of Henderson, NC.
I discovered that Carolina Barbecue and Seafood is apparently closed - deleted.
J&G Barbecue has moved to a new location - fixed.
Additionally, phone numbers have been added for the Smithfield's Chicken 'N Bar-B-Q chain.
Hendrix Barbeque has 2 locations in Salisbury, NC.
While these locations have not been mentioned in any of the most famous NC Barbecue guides, the now defunct (apparently) Hendrix of Mocksville, NC has been mentioned.
I added these locations after dining at Hendrix on Innes Street, and finding the barbecue to be both smokey flavored and representative of Lexington style barbecue.
I don't know if the Hendrix are related to the Mocksville name sake.
I am looking forward to trying some of these places the next time I am in the area.
Perhaps it is ironic North Carolina's largest city is probably one of its weakest BBQ areas. Nonetheless, Bill Spoon's is arguably Charlotte's best Eastern NC whole-hog barbecue.
Unfortunately, there is no smoke flavor to be found here, but the Q comes dressed in a vinegar based sauce which is very good.
Sides are excellent. Mustard based slaw and BBQ potatoes complement the pork nicely.
I'd like to suggest Woodlands Barbecue in Blowing Rock (woodlandsbbq.com). They've got the best ribs I've found so far in the state.
The Woodlands Barbecue of Blowing Rock is actually in the POI file. The word "The" in front of "Woodlands" in the name throws me when I'm trying to find it in the list, too!
I've tried to be very true to the business names including minding my "cues and Q's."
...and I totally agree with you....great ribs!
This thread gets me hungry!
I can't wait to go back!!!!
Give us a shout when you come to NC, diesel!
@ khokhonutt - I have renamed The Woodlands Barbecue to Woodlands Barbecue, The. Hopefully, this will make it easier to find in a spreadsheet, etc.
Additionally, I have fixed a duplication on The Skylight Inn - Thanks to Box Car.
diesel, a good friend of mine has verified your love of Carolina Smokehouse in Cashiers, NC. He lives about an hour away from there, and says he goes there about once a month. He also says they have the best onion rings he's ever eaten.
I gotta' try this place, but when I go to the NC Mountains it is hard to drive past Green River Barbecue in Saluda, NC....but I'm going to do it soon!
Well, I'm glad someone that actually knows good barbecue also likes the Carolina Smokehouse. Let us know what you think when you visit. Make sure you go hungry.
I have a couple jars of their sauce in my pantry...
Whitley's Barbecue of Lexington is now Hendrix Barbecue of Lexington. POI File has been changed to reflect this business update.
I will try to review this restaurant very soon.
