Sox.exe and sound files

Okay, I get it. You put the Sox.exe executable in the same directory as the POI Loader if you want to include sound files for alerts and such. My questions is this: Does the sound file need to be in .wav format or is .mp3 also acceptable for the Sox.exe executable to recognize the sound file?

sox and wav

Sox.exe is used with wav files and is the only way to get audio alerts with POIs using Garmin GPS receivers that do not play mp3 audio. Your nuvi 1490 falls into this category.

For the GPS receivers that can play mp3, sox.exe is not needed when using mp3 audio alert files--and sox.exe is needed when using wav audio alert files.

When using sox.exe, only use the version found here:

Sox.exe and Mac

From my experience it is not needed with the Mac POI Loader.

sox.exe required if no mp3 player

Some GPS units have the ability to play mp3 files - helps pass the time while you are navigating to your destination. In these cases, sound files can be either .mp3 or .wav.

However, for those units that do not have a mp3 player, .wav files are the only option for sound alerts.

why only this Sox.exe

Why only use the sox.exe version refered to by CraigW?

other versions don't work

There are several versions of the sox.exe file, but this is the only version known to work correctly with POI Loader.

That's good to know. I just use mp3s for my zumo but was setting up some wineries POIs for a friend with a 255 who doesn't know or care how his gps works. I will redo the files with wav sound tomorrow

Sox.Exe And Mac

I have loaded .wav files with a Mac without sox.exe since this is a Windows file and won't work on a Mac
