The unit supports custom

The unit supports custom pois. For voice alerts you will need sox.exe and wav files.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 for custom pois.

When you use POI Loader

You have the choice of loading the custom POIs to the GPS or the Micro SD card.

Illiterate? Write for free help.

the tutor said the custom

the tutor said the custom POI should be installed in the device. If i choose to install into the SD card, will these POIs be recognized by Garmin device?

Sox.exe

I also have the 1490. When

I also have the 1490. When you install Custom POIs to the SD card you will get a message each time the unit starts up asking if you want to transfer the custom pois to the main memory- just say no or you will move them from the SD card to the unit's memory. This is a pain but it takes a second to just say no each time it starts - and then you will have all your Custom POIs on the SD card - and they will work just fine. You will see them listed on your 1490 in the Extras folder in tools.

You will get the warning every time you start the unit. It happens on my 1350 also. You could clear this warning on earlier units such as my 650. I already had a conversation with Garmin on this.

There response was : "Thank you for contacting Garmin International. The highest compliment a customer can give a company is to be concerned enough to offer suggestions for improvement of a product. We appreciate your comments and opinions regarding our products.
I have forwarded your e-mail to the design team, as they always welcome customer feedback. Many of the comments and suggestions we receive, such as yours, are evaluated for potential implementation in future Garmin products or software releases. While we cannot guarantee that what you have suggested will occur, we do appreciate you passing along your opinions."
Its funny because my response back was that they devalued the units.

Red Light Cameras POI on 1490LMT

Just upgraded to the 1490LMT from my old nuvi and I notice the red-light camera alert, instead of showing a red banner across the top of the screen, is a small box that pops up, which means that I can easily miss it. Is there someway to make these alerts more prominent on my screen?

1490LMT Traffic Subscription

Does the $49 premium traffic subscription offer any more features than the one that comes free with the 1490LMT?

I doubt that you can make them more prominent visually so I suggest you look to adding a wav file audio alert to the red-light POI to make them harder to overlook:

FM traffic

The paid FM traffic subscription will remove your ads but not do much else.

Note that FM traffic can be either supplied by Navteq or ClearChannel (each with their lifetime subscription fee) and in many areas, folks here seem to prefer ClearChannel. Your free ad-based FM traffic is Navteq so the purchase of a ClearChannel subscription may help. You may want to ask here at The Factory to see if others in your area prefer one over the other.
