SUCCESS - c530 volume increased, thanks RT

If any owners of a c530 would like an increased volume setting, please read this:

Well, the saga of increasing the volume setting on my c530 had a successful ending.

Phil Hornby reported that The non-TTS voice files are made up of a collection of .WAV files. If you wanted to alter the volume of these, you would have to extract each file, put them through some kind of audio processing software.

retiredtechnician offered to take a look at my file. He opened all 116 wav files and increased the volume level. It took him about 3 hours, but the end result is fantastic. I can't thank him enough. The increased volume is a big improvement for motorcycle use.

retiredtechnician has offered to email a copy of the English_American.vpn file to any c530 owner who is interested.

That is awesome! Glad that it worked out for you. My standard non-TTS voice is loud enough for me though. It was the TTS file that was hard for me to hear, and I have corrected it as well with the info that hornby provided.

BTW

Any chance of posting the file as I don't know if my e-mails will accept such a big file.

It is not huge

The voice file is large but not HUGE. It is 3.6 MB. Most email accounts should be able to accept 3.6 MB. Let us know.

I think RT deserves a medal smile ... all I did was pass on a bit of info, I read elsewhere!

I'd rather not post it in case it's copyrighted. I'll attach it to an email for anyone who wants it.

Zipping It

asianfire wrote:

Good suggestion. But after zipping, it's still over 3MB. Also, I've found out when helping others with POI files, some people don't have software to unzip (or don't know how to use it). Unless someone specifically requests it to be zipped, I'll send it as a vpm file.

Sound, movie and picture files don't compact well.

Yeah, I have noticed that sound and movie files don't compress well. I guess cause they are compressed already.

I zipped up a file the other day at work and it went from 12.xMBs to 588KBs. I have never seen it zip up that tight before.

Volume?

I usually turn my down but then again, I do not use a motorcycle. I guess that is why a number of people invest in the Blue Tooth models. Will the speakers on the c530 hold up to the increased volume without running into distortion?

C530 Volume

I would be intertested in getting that file. You can make it zip file attachment. my email addres is
arbrey@charter.net
Thanks in advance and thanks fir taking the time to do this for all! I d/ld the hex editor but can't get the "text" to read.

No Distortion

The volune modification made the voice commands much louder, but they are crystal clear with no distortion.

Non TTS Voice files

Spent the weekend doing some more work on the non TTS files. I did a byte-by-byte comparision on the 'English_American_.vpm' file from the c530 and the nuvi 350, and they are identical; which indicates that this file may be the same in all Garmin units that use it.

I also worked up a method of 'semi-mass converting' the volume increase; so now it only takes 5-10 minutes to do the 116 files, not the 3 hours when doing the tedious conversion of one file at a time.

Those with motorcycles, and those hard of hearing, appreciated the louder c530. So if you could use the increased volume on a Garmin unit that uses the non TTS file (English or otherwise), BACK IT UP and send it over with a percent of desired volume increase .... I'll convert it for you. (non TTS files usually do not have a name before the period, i.e. Jack, Jill, etc)

Send an email using my 'Contact' link and I'll reply with an email address to send attachments.

What do I do with the vpn file once I adjusted it? Do I replace the current units file? Do i just add it to the folder? Could you walk me through it please?

Don't delete it yet.

Don't delete the old voice file until you know you're satisfied with the new voice file, just rename it to something like English_American_.vpmOrig, then copy the new voice file into that folder. If everything is ok, then delete the original sound file.

RT

You could make it a self extracting zip file. With Winzip, open the zip file, say it's:
"English_American_.ZIP" that contains the
"English_American_.VPM" file.

From within Winzip, with the zipped file contents showing, Click on "Actions" in the menu bar, then select "Make .Exe File" and follow the prompts to make the zip file a selfextracting ".exe file"

Once the person receives the converted zip file, all they have to do is run the "English_American_.EXE"
to unzip it and get an "English_American_.VPM" file.

What winzip does is take the zip file and adds a tiny program that unzips the file. When it does this, it changes the file extention from ".zip" to ".exe" All one needs to do is run the .exe file. The receiving person doesn't even need Winzip because the program that unzips the file is part of the file. But you probably already knew all this anyway.

Not worth the work

Zipping compressed audio and video files sometimes isn't worth the work. To me the biggest advantage of the 'Self-Extracting Winzip' program is to compile multiple files into a single self-extracting file, many times to run a program. That's why I use it for POI Verifier.

Data to self-extract this single file:
English_American_.vpm = 3,698,842 bytes
English_American_.zip = 3,191,259 bytes

Adding the self-extracting overhead:
English_American_.exe = 3,317,760 bytes

With high-speed internet, what's the point?

It really does work and I appreciate Retired Technicians help on his hard work with helping me install this file. Thank you!

Not TTS

Please note, this file is not a TTS (Text-to-speech) file. If you're looking to replace a 'Jill' or 'Jack' file, you have a GPS unit that uses TTS. If this is the case, you may want to have a look at: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/16285

If your unit uses non-TTS (i.e. "Turn right in 200 feet", NOT "turn right onto Main Street"), then this file may help you. The file is 'dissected' into multiple (approx. 117) .wav files, each .wav file is then increased in volume, and all of the .wav files are then combined.

I don't know if I still have this file laying around as it's been ages since I did this. If someone needs it, let me know and I'll either find it or modify it again.

Thanks.
