THANK YOU, Smartphones!

Be careful what you wish for. At the moment, GPS innovation is still running strong, as is smartphones. If smartphones become so ubiquitous that the standalone GPS market dries up, they will go the way of the Walkman. I prefer the standalone GPS as you don't need network coverage, it is more reliable, and it is often easier to use while in a car.

I know it's OFF topic discussion. But I agreed with you 100%. Yes my phone had GPS which replies on Network coverage which sucks especially in recalculating if I am off it's route. Unlike standalone GPS unit, works great.!

I totally agree..... I want my phone to be a phone and my GPS to do it's thing!! Guess I'm just old fashioned...or...as my kids say "just old"!

did u forget about GPS built in the cars? grin

At this price

I am considering buying it now, even though I don't need it. Maybe for a future unit...

Outstanding

Great info - thanks.

Lifetime price dropping

I suppose the price of lifetime update will continue to drop since new model Nuvi's are including Lifetime Maps. There will be an evershring number of consumers that will be in the market to purchase Lifetime maps for older model GPS's.

Thanks for the tip!

A terrific bargain ....

Wish it was lifetime of the

Wish it was lifetime of the person, not the unit. I need a new GPS but I'm too lazy to go get one. In the mean time, new maps would be nice if I knew I could take them with me.

Yes, I was in a Best Buy this weekend and their price is $89.99 for the Garmin nüMaps Lifetime Update Card.

Saw the same thing at Best Buy

That $59.99 price is a great price. I've got 3 family members that need to jump on this.

Last weekend at Target

the price was $119.

The Droid GPS works well but the screen is too small for me. You need an auto docking station, and have to plug in to a power source. I prefer my Nuvi 765T mounted on the dash. One plug when switching from car to coach.

My thoughts exactly. I will use my Droid in a pinch but for travel I prefer my 765T. I just wish my 765T has better traffic info and the satellite layer.

Read the reviews on that

Read the reviews on that Amazon listing. There are many one star reviews. Many have had trouble with the code that is sent to them. I went to purchase and then had second thoughts that perhaps there may be some problem here after reading what people are saying. (Yes, there are may five star reviews here too but there are a LOT of one star)

Code

The current price is $59.39. I do not know why people are complaining about code problems. I bought my card back in August for the then low price of $79.95. I only activated it when 2011.30 came out in November as I was already up-to-date when I got the card. There were no issues at all. Scratched the protective covering off of the card to reveal the PIN. Entered it on the web site and confirmed it was for my Nuvi (have several registered devices).

But this forum thread is for the mailed card

Welcome to POIFactory, Robert.

There was a short time when ordering the Online Code from Amazon for the updates that there was a problem getting Garmin's servers to accept the code. Many 1-star Customer reviews resulted from that. The issue was resolved in a few days.

But the current sub-$60 with free S&H item on Amazon is for the mailed plastic card update, not the Online Code. There was never an issue with failure to activate the card's code so this should not be a reason to delay buying the update.

I do note that some of the low reviews came from folks who didn't understand how the update process works and large download required, but that's really not Amazon's or Garmin's fault. PS--Before doing a first update, this thread, although getting a bit dated now, describes the procedure and some of the potential pitfalls:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/29239

Note also that whether you buy from Amazon or direct from Garmin, you'll get the same product--the only issue is how much you've paid.

Long story short: if you want current maps for the lifetime of your GPS, don't hesitate. Buy now for under $60 (making sure you check the free S&H rather than Standard Shipping when you Checkout at the Amazon site).

Navteq contract ends in 2015 according to GARMIN LTD 10-K filed with the SEC on February 26, 2008.

Also remember useful life as defined by Garmin has not too long ago included a simple change in the compression algorithm for the mapset itself rendering updates impossible for a slew of devices.

At $60 though (Garmin MSRP itself is now down to $89) it is getting closer to worth it. Still - that $60 goes a long way towards a brand new Garmin with improved feature set, new battery - and free lifetime maps.

I probably won't get the lifetime maps all things considered until I, "A:" find my maps lacking and, "B:" buy it from the clearance bin.

CraigW is Correct

When I ordered my lifetime from Garmin, I made the mistake of not changing the default shipping to free. This made the card price $65. So I figured for another $4 I could get the download immediately. When I got the code, it was not readable. I went to my email from Amazon and the code was there. I went back onto Garmin, entered the code and everything went fine from there. Amazon has corrected their problems. The process of updating the map is long. It took about 2 hours to down load on a high-speed line.

So there's another 60 cents

So there's another 60 cents drop. I thought it would go back up after cyberweek. Looks like it's going nowhere but down. I hope it'll be in the low $50s soon.

Hmmm

One would think that the limitations on the lifetime map update cards would apply to lifetime Garmin units as well....

Just 8 hours later, and now it's up to $67.32.

Wow!

I checked around 7:30AM EST and it was still $49.95. Talk about price swings. Amazing how cheap these have gotten since August when I thought $79.95 was a deal. It also makes me wonder if they are trying to push these out now in anticipation of the whole lifetime upgrade program going away when the NAVTEQ contract ends.

Vendor changes

what you guys are observing is most likely Amazon's stock of these cards dwindling in and out. When Amazon is low on a particular product, it switches out vendors for it but since different vendors have different prices, you may be observing such wild fluctuations in price. $5 shipping is a dead give away that the product is NOT shipped by Amazon - amazon always offer free shipping on small stuff like this.

The digital version - code

The digital version - code download with no card sent is now $119.99! Isn't this above Garmin's list?

You're correct it wasn't Amazon. It was some other vendor. It's like a roller coaster ride. I've seen 3 to 4 fluctuations since I posted my previous reply (price was $49.95 at that time). It's back to $68 now.

Just got mine.

I have bought camera equipment and a Garmin GPS and they were reliable, had good prices and were honest when I bought there.

They also have buydig.com and the prices vary slightly so I check which one has the lowest price before I oreder from them.
