Awesome deal

Wow .. how low will it go now ....
Great deal!

it will

continue to go down. Too many GPS units are now selling with lifetime map updates for them to charge $100 for it.

Thank You

Thanks for the notice.

Thanks

Since I intend to keep my unit for a while and it is not a $100 unit, I plan on purchasing it when I get home from work. Don't think it will go below $59 but you never know.

Let's All Say Thanks to the SmartPhones

That's why the cost of our GPS units (and map updates) are dropping. Face it, GPS units are not selling well since so many phones have GPS now. The best way to clear inventory is to lower prices, and that's what they're doing. THANK YOU, Smartphones!

Bought the maps

I sprung for them at this price.

Now the reminder that my maps are over a year old will soon be history.

Now I just need to find the post about avoiding the firmware upgrades (so as to not lose certain desirable features I now have).

Smartphones

THANK YOU, Smartphones!

Be careful what you wish for. At the moment, GPS innovation is still running strong, as is smartphones. If smartphones become so ubiquitous that the standalone GPS market dries up, they will go the way of the Walkman. I prefer the standalone GPS as you don't need network coverage, it is more reliable, and it is often easier to use while in a car.

I would email Amazon about your purchase, as they have credited me in the past if the purchase was <30 days old.

why 2014?

care to elaborate?

I just got 1490LMT (TY Amazon), did the map update and it downloaded the Mapsource. Well, I'm weirded out becausee Mapsource indicates that my map subscription expires in one year. I assume that the expiration applies just to the latest 2011.3 update but not to the following updates which should be free. Now, if this is really only until 2014 than it's really not worth it to get lifetime subscription, that money might be better spent toward future purchase of another GPS hardware/software. It's not like even the latest update is 100% accurate and why bother updating all the time if a few years down the line we still have to splurge for another better gps and/or better gps app for our smartphones wink

I'm sure it will...

I'm sure it will...but it's only up to you how bad you need those updates...and... if it make sense for you.

Finally they started charging more reasonable price but, it is still very questionable if there is adequate value for the money spent.

Technology is advancing too fast as well as competition and that's main reason, what make value of map updates so questionable...

Prices

Amazon constantly adjusts their prices according to demand, but the general trend for maps over the long term has been down.

A few months ago Garmin reduced the list price for the map updates, and Amazon consistently has some of the lowest nuvi prices.

A few weeks ago I was sorry I missed the $62 price, so I got an alert today for $59 I sprang for it.

Sounds like a reasonable

Amazon's Price

The $59 Amazon price is for the card they ship you with the authorization code you will need when you log into Garmin. The shipping price brought it up to $65 and would take 3-5 days to get it. Amazon has the downloadable version for $69 and you get it right away. I bought the $69 version last night, worked great. Be prepared for about a 2 hour download for the updated map however.

I know it's OFF topic discussion. But I agreed with you 100%. Yes my phone had GPS which replies on Network coverage which sucks especially in recalculating if I am off it's route. Unlike standalone GPS unit, works great.!

You must have asked for something other than the Super Saver Shipping, since it's free. Did you choose one of the expedited shipping options or forget to check the free Super Saver Shipping option? It can be bought today at least (for US delivery addresses) for $59.99 with S&H included.

Yup, that must be it. Amazon

Yup, that must be it. Amazon says "this item ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping" and it never lies. The trick is when checking out we must manually select Super Saver Shipping or else it defaults to Standard Shipping (3-5 business days).

Lifetime for $59.99

The secret is to be sure to select the "FREE - Super Saver" shipping option when you check out.

It most certainyl will be free as long as you chose it.

Unfortunately, that Free Shipping is not the default selection when you check out and must click the button to select the free option.

Very weird...

Lifetime maps for $59.99 still (1 December), but if you decide to go for digital delivery, that's $68.89!

for all the above postings

for all the above postings here I have an important question:
If you buy a 'Lifetime' package.. isn't it only good for the (current) device itself? In other words if you buy a new device (gps unit) or you loose your current device .. your Lifetime maps are only good for the device in hand.. ?/ Yes? No ?

.....

Just the one unit

My niece lost her new unit with lifetime maps while out on the boat. Too bad.

The lifetime update is tied to GPS unit you first use it with. You could buy a lifetime update and save it for a future GPS purchase, but you are right that it only works with one GPS.

It's tied to the GPS AND the owner as well.

I am concerned with buying the map update then having my unit not able to hold updates. I am already having to delete things to fit the firmware releases.

Store additional data on SD card

I have a Streetpilot 530 and after 1 year I was not able to load all of the map data on the unit. Also, the lifetime updates added Mexico. However, when I update my unit, I put the remaining maps on my SD card. As far as unit performance, I don't notice any difference than if they were in the unit. Plus, the SD card has enough room to add as much map data as is possibly introduced in the future. Therefore, I don't think you have much to be concerned about.

smartphones,gps

why would anyone want to keep paying 10.00 a month for a service like gps . rip off if you ask me.
mike

Data is more than GPS

It's email, Facebook (etc.), weather reports, news and more. But yes, a dedicated GPS is far better. The smartphone is only a backup if needed.

"Shelf Life" of the card?

I am thinking of purchasing this on the card format. Do these typically have an expiration? I am wondering if a card would be good to use in a few months.

And thanks for the info.

One lmore use for all that space ?

mkahn wrote:

If you take a card that goes max capacity for your device (for example, my 205 has a 2GB limit for its Micro SD), then you can also store data that you may not need right away.

An example: I have over 200 vehicle files to choose from (Thanks, Tony and all others), and this will definitely NOT fit in my Nüvi. So I have all SRF files loaded on the SD card as backup, and whenever I add new ones (like the new, jumping vehicles I found at Tony's yesterday - I love the Jetski that skids across the lane, or the F18 that flies on its back every now and again!!), I copy the new files in BOTH directories - on the Nüvi and on the SD. And I can keep the VEHICLE folder on the Garmin's disk to a streamlined version.

Makes sense ? It does to me, in any case grin

Not sure what plan you have,

Not sure what plan you have, but my Verizon broadband for my Droid (and any other Verizon smart phone) costs a total of $29.95 for full internet access and unlimited downloading.

Would I rather have it for free? Absolutely. But the usefullness of having the entire Internet available on my phone certainly has some high value.

The Droid GPS works well but the screen is too small for me. You need an auto docking station, and have to plug in to a power source. I prefer my Nuvi 765T mounted on the dash. One plug when switching from car to coach.

BTW, I bought a cheap plastic picture frame

http://home.roadrunner.com/~kwildman/frame.jpg

I turn it so the lip in hanging down over the edge of the dash and use a cheap (~ $5) rubber dash "sticky" pad to hold it in place. The whole thing goes from one vehicle to the next. I do it this way because both dash tops are textured vinyl and the suction cup doesn't hold.

I just noticed that if you

I just noticed that if you go to the Shopping cart and sign up for the Amazon Visa Rewards Card you get a $40 rebate which brings the price down to $19.99.

Now that's a hell of deal. cool

I don't need another card, but for $40 I can cut it up or lock it away. smile

96 Safari Sahara- 3530, 35', CAT 300 ex 68 Ultra Van. Garmin 765t

thanks for this...

That certainly seems to be a good deal.

I don't have a newer Garmin (that displays 3D, for example), but does the lifetime subscription for maps also include all those additional files?

Includes 3D and junction view data

Lifetime updates include 3D and junction view data.
Lifetime updates are not transferrable to another Garmin, so if you use it with your older Garmin, the updates only apply to that unit.

But if you plan to purchase a newer model soon and include the lifetime updates, it will apply to that unit.

I don't recommend you buy the lifetime updates and put it on the shelf for a while, as if there is a registration problem after 30 days you may have a problem getting that corrected. These are sold by Amazon, so you have more support behind your purchase than the ones I bought through Amazon from a no name supplier that fraudulently sold unactivated lifetime gift cards then disappeared. Amazon did stand behind the sale and refunded me, but that may not always be the case.

Nice

I really like that lifetime map updates are now included with many of the newer models. It's one of the best features they've added.
