What if your Garmin is stolen

When you buy your Garmin you have to register and download the serial number and what ever else they may need.

So If your Garmin is stolen is there a way that Garmin can track your unit when it is turned on?

No, it's a receiver, not a transceiver.

How can you track other people that are using Copilot? Well I should say one Copilot user can track another Copilot user.

I don't

know of anyway it could tracked. Make sure your Garmin Lock is on and the thief shouldn't be able to use it.

Reason I ask

Last September I rented a car at the Knoxville Airport with a Garmin GPS. When I returned the car, around 0600 hours, the car rental was closed.

So I placed the Garmin in the trunk,,,,,you know out of sight out of mind,,,,and placed the key in the drop box.

When I received my AMX charges, the Rental Company put an extra $250.00 on my statement because I did not return the GPS. SAY WHAT?????

AMX is fighting this charge but I was sure hoping that Garmin had a way to track itself if needed.

I wonder how many time this has happen to other customers.

By the way, this rental company does not open until 0800 hours.

I have lost touch with modern Garmin models, but...

...I wonder if any of them currently (or perhaps in future) will have cellphone data connectivity? Of course, if all a Garmin has is a receiver for GPS signals, that's one way communication, and there would be no way to track via that. But as soon as you have two-way communication (say, for always-on updates of status information, etc.). there would be a way to track at that point. In theory.

ALK CoPilot?

If you've had a GPSr stolen recently, I'm very sorry to hear that. My first 1490T was stolen just before Thanksgiving. Someone smashed a window in my car to get it and there's really no way to track it.

If you're talking about the CoPilot application for smart phones, that's not a Garmin product, and it runs on smart phones which are, in effect, two-way devices not receive-only like a Garmin dedicated GPSr. The application periodically uploads the phone's location to a server, where the users "friends" can access it.

Your are Right

My Copilot is for my Laptop. And now that you mention it I do have to be on-line for me to be able to track another user. That is if I have their permission. I did not think about that when I asked.

Anyway I got my answer, not the one I wanted, but at least I now know.

Thank you all for your input.

Doesn't copilot require an Internet connection? It can transmit location information through the Internet.

That's not fair. Don't they have CCTVs or something?

Do you leave your wallet on your dashboard?

GPS devices are very popular theft items. I treat mine like my wallet or Nikon, wherever I go these possessions go, even if just a pitstop. You're only a victim if you act like a victim.

VICTIM????

Well,,,it was not mine to take,,,,,,that is why I locked it in the rental car trunk when I returned the rental car. If a rental employee was on site, I would have left it at the rental office with the rental employee.

Maybe a rental employee

Maybe a rental employee needed it more than the company.

I left mine under the seat

I guess I've learned my lesson. Even the most careful can be victims. I never did leave the GPSr on the dash. The locked car was in my own driveway, in a safe suburban neighborhood. I left the 1490T and its bean-bag mount under the seat, but probably not pushed all the way in, so it was seen and taken. My GPSr and traffic receiver now always go with me. The mount gets stashed in the console. My wife says I've "lost my innocence".

and let Garmin know

Contact Garmin's Service line and they will take the police report number and flag the GPS as stolen. That will prevent someone from getting a Garmin repair on it, if nothing else.

Copilot only runs on the 1690, which has an internet connection. And then the device has to be both on and in range of the network; I wouldn't know if Garmin offers a BOLO service for these devices, not that it applies to your situation.

As to the lost navigator - it is just as likely that the cleaners never saw it and that the next renter now has a new navigator at your expense; What you should have done was to mark the fact that you left it in the trunk on a paper and leave that attached to the keys and a marked up copy of your contact.

Having 'purchased' it from the rental company, you should get a bill of sale that includes the device's ID and register the loss with Garmin, with you as the present owner. Who knows? One day you might get it back!!

What model was it anyway? If it was something that is now inexpensive, then the charge is usurious. They aren't allowed to profit from your misfortune.

Then again, if your Amex card has insurance, would that cover the 'theft'?

Should have left a note with

Should have left a note with your key

Note

I did include the paper work with the keys. I had to state the mileage and the amount of fuel I left in the tank. This paper work had the information about the GPS on it. That should have been enough for them to look for it.

The GPS was mounted to the sand bag and I placed it right in the middle of the trunk where it would be easy to see.

I don't know the model. I am not familiar with Garmin but it was,,,,used looking.

Good point about the theft insurance. But if I am the one excused of theft I doubt that it would cover me. I did tell them that if I was being accused of being a theft, file a police report and have me arrested.

I will just have to see what happens. I will come back and let you all know what happens also.

Again, thank you all for you input. There are some very good suggestion.

Theft

Nasty!

I thought it did some sort of registration when you first use the Garmin. Must be just an on device thing

Garmin lock

I never leave my Nuvi in plain sight when I park the truck-AND I used Garmin lock the first time I turned it on!

stolen or just lost

I lost my Garmin a couple of years ago - I called their 1-800 number and reported the serial number - they seemed sincere when they said if it was ever sent in for repairs, they would recognize it as mine, and not the finders.

Of course, I am still waiting.

Theft

I got my first Garmin GPS for Christmas, and when I regerstered it, it found my S/N and model. What if someone stole it, and went to update the maps. Is there a way they could track who was updateing it?

.

If you report the unit as stolen to Garmin, then no one will be able to update the maps.

But it's unlikely that Garmin will "track" them.
