Auto on and off... Newbie XXL 540 TM

Is there a way to make this GPS turn on when you turn on the ignition and off when you turn the ignition off?

Seem like a pretty standard GPS function but haven't been able to locate it?

try using cig lighter for power source

I know with my 765t if I use the cig lighter for power it shuts off when car is turned off and thus the garmin will auto power off in 15-30 seconds unless you hit the button to have it stay on. Not all cars do this though with the cig lighter power.

Power cable attached?

My Garmin NUVI goes on automatically when I have the power cable plugged into it. If it's on battery you have to use the power switch.

OTOH, I wouldn't leave it attached to the dash for fear of someone breaking the window to get it. Leaving the holder and/or power cable is a signal to thieves (along with the tell-tale window ring) that you have a GPS. They'll break a $300 window (or more) to get a $150 GPS.

Agree but....

I never leave mine in the car either but if it was going into a secure area like my garage at home it might be worth it to leave it up but agree if you leave it on the windshield in an unsecured area
you're just asking for trouble...even for a minute.

The TomTom

Yes, the Garmin Nuvi's will turn off or on with the vehicle ignition but the OP has a Tom Tom. The TomTom doesn't turn on/off automatically when you turn the vehicle on and off. You need to use the power button.

I had a TomTom

That wouldn't stay turned off - and often found it in a state of total battery drain because it somehow powered up on its own after I shut it down.

No the TomTom will not turn off and on with the ignition.

OFF but not ON

My TomTom XXl540 TM will turn off when power is removed (with an option to tap the button and keep it on), but there is no option to turn on when power is applied. I check the unit the next time I'm in my car to see where the auto off is in the menu system.

Your probably

Your probably right, it has to be turned on but gives you an option to turn it off or not. It's been awhile since I used my 540 wink

Found it

Under the "Change Preferences" menu, on the sixth page there will be a "Battery Saving preferences" menu item. The second setting is "Device stays on when external power is lost". When it is checked, the unit will shut off when external power is removed, after a 10 second countdown for you to select cancel and have the unit stay on.

Auto on and off

I found the preference to stay on but alas, this unit has no auto on feature.

Thanks.

I don't get the connection between Garmin features and a TT.
