Brand New and sort of stuck

Okay, I'm all new to GPS, got a Tomtom XXL550T. My wife and I live full time in a motorhome. I'm not sure I have this correct or not. I think I downloaded a low clearance alert POI, and Walmart and Cracker Barrel POIs. It in the POI management menu on the TT it seems they are all together. I guess I just want to make sure I'm downloading it correctly. I also downloaded MyPOI monitor program for updating. Maybe there's a better way.

Also, is there an internet mapping like googlemaps that will allow me to plan a trip on my PC online and then download the trip to the TT?

Thanks, I'm slowly reading my way through the discussions etc.

New and learning

Hi States. I'm new but I've been learning. I plug my Garmin Nuvi in just about every trip, just to get used to the features. I've found a wealth of information here at POI Factory and found everyone here to be very helpful.

My Nuvi can't exactly do point to point travels but I can set a destination then plan "stops" along the way. I've used Google maps and it will download the destination as text, then your GPS will plan the route. Example, I travel to Wisconsin in the summer but I don't want to go through Chicago because of the traffic. My Garmin routes me that way but I add Normal, IL as a stop, so the Garmin plans an alternate route with Normal as a stop. I added that as a favorite so I can travel that way every time I go up there.

I too have the Walmart and Cracker Barrel POI downloads as well as the Shell station. In my town I found that each file had at least one item in the wrong location.

Read the FAQ here and vist the Tom Tom site for more information. You should be able to set your Tom Tom for simulated trips to see if your POI alerts are working.

Try These

I'm not sure what problem you are having with POIs, you might try this http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6661

Also, for mapping, try Tyre, here is the link:

Downloading the low clearance alert poi certainly makes sense. Since you are a Newbie, you may not have known that your XXL 550T came loaded with over 7,000,000 pois, including every Wal-Mart & Cracker Barrel in the US & Canada.
To load pois into your unit, download the desired file. Convert the file to .ov2 with POI Edit, if necessary. Use Windows Explorer to copy the file into your 550 map folder.
Googlemaps will download to your 550. http://www.ehow.com/how_5912500_transfer-google-maps-tomtom....

Put It into the Map

Once you have converted it, make sure that you put it into the Map directory and not in the root directory of your TT.

You should then see it in the POIs on your TT.

Good Luck!
