Does Mapsource transfer Junction View files to SD card?

Ok, I got my new 1450LMT (my third Garmin) ... it came with 2011.1 NA.

Instead of overwriting the previously installed map, I tried to update just a small 2011.3 region (Chicago to Peoria) on an miniSD card inserted into the GPS.

Mapsource 6.16.3 didn't appear to create and copy a JCV file onto the miniSD card.

Should Mapsoure have created a JVC subdirectory on the SD card?

When I deselected 2011.1 internal maps and selected 2011.3 miniSD maps, then ran a simulated path, I didn't get a KNOWN Junction View display.

Should there be a JCV file created in addition to an IMG file on the miniSD card?

I have two lifetime map update for two GPS's

I'm wondering something.

I have a lifetime map update subscription for my 260W (still working just great).

I have a second lifetime update subscription for my new 1450LMT.

I was able to use Mapsoure to create, unlock and install a couple of 2011.3 regions on the mini-sd card on my 1450LMT ... but there was no JCV subdirectory or file.

I would hope Mapsource would recognize the fact that the mini-SD card is inserted into my 1450LMT ... and install the proper JCV file also on the mini-SD card.

But it didn't happen.

Why am I attempting to install just a few 2011.3 regions on a mini-sd card on my 1450LMT (which can with 2011.1 preinstalled) ... well, I'm a little leary of updating the internal memory until I really give the 1450LMT a few shake down cruises.

I don't think so

My understanding is that the mapsource doesn't create either JCV file folder or 3d map (for units compatible with it). You have to do full installation procedure or manually transfer JCV folder to your card. And I don't think the JCV file is splittable.

Agreed

I'm just guessing here, but I also assume that features like JV, LA and 3D will only be installed to a GPS that can use the features via the direct installation from the map update files to the GPS--and not by using Mapsource and MapInstall to create maps to install to a GPS or SD card.

As far as I can see by looking at my 2011.30 map on the computer as used by Mapsource, the new map doesn't even have the junction view file that would be used by the GPS.

If guessing wrong, I look forward to being corrected.

You're correct

@CraigW
You're correct. JCV folder and 3d map are downloaded and transferred to your GPS during installation procedure. Mapsource doesn't have those files. If your unit doesn't support JV and 3D your download doesn't have them at all.

Mapsource does nothing but create a gmapsupp.img in a garmin folder of your datacard. You need to manually place the other files and they mus be versions that match the map version.

Here is something describing the rules for a dual map installation (which is what you are essentially doing) I got this from the web a long time ago.
========================

If you have two CN versions, one on the nuvi drive and a different one on the SD Card (example: CN NA NT 2010 on nuvi drive, CN EU NT 2010 on the SD Card), the mapsets, Junction View/3D Buildings should stay on their respective drives in their respective folders (nuvi drive, SD Card drive). So keep all CN NA NT and related files on the nuvi drive, all CN EU NT and related files on the SD Card. I have tested this and it does work if you follow the guidelines above. Do not mix and match other Junction View files from different map versions (example: 2009.10 JCV file will NOT work with 2010.10 mapset)

nuvi drive:
Main mapset x:/Garmin
3D Buildings (for above) x:/Garmin (must be same version from above mapset)
Junction View (for above) x:/Garmin/JCV (must be same version from above mapset)

SD Card drive:
Main mapset x:/Garmin
3D Buildings x:/Garmin (must be same version from above mapset)
Junction View x:/Garmin/JCV (must be same version from above mapset)

Typical....
\garmin\gmap3d.img
\garmin\JCV\D1279010B.JCV <- the filename changes

Thanks guys

Thanks ... I figured something like that might be the case.

But I was hoping that after registering my 1450LMT and doing a "computer only" lifetime map update that a Garmin genie would recognize that I was trying to load 2011.3 onto a mini-sd card that was INSERTED into my 1450LMT and would bring the 2011.3 JCV and traffic files along with it.

That would make it too easy. But since I chose computer only, that means I don't have the JCV file for 2011.3 without going through the whole process again because the lifetime update on my trusty old 260w doesn't include the junction view stuff either ... so I guess I just wait for a couple of weeks before updating the 1450LMT internally.

I really want to put the new 1450 for awhile to the test without introducing a map update problem.

Interestingly enough, Mapsource was smart enough to load unlock files for both of my registered, lifetime-map-registered Garmin GPS's onto the SD card so that the selected-region IMG would run on both GPS's.

Unlock codes

When you open the Mapsource and go Utilities/Manage Map Products/Unlock Regions you'll see a bunch of unlock information. Every one, that is related to certain map set gets loaded. In your case both unlock codes for both of your units are there.
