Is my 855 retarded?

I just discovered something that probably explains why sometimes my 855 can set unused for four or five days and the battery will be down a couple of bars, the next time it might set for two days and the battery is stone dead.

When I don't have it in the car it sets on a dresser in a spare bedroom. The other day I went in that room for something and the 855 was on and down to one bar. I didn't turn it on and my wife never touches it, so the only thing left is it turned itself on. I was telling a friend about it and he said he had the same thing happen with his 855.

I had a TomTom that did that

Have yet to see it happen with my Garmin.

Odd thing to have happen...

Mine sits in a case

My 855 sits in a case, so I have never seen this behavior. I read in one of the threads that someone keeps a very small cardboard between the battery & device contacts to disable the battery when not in use. Might have to try that to keep the battery charged when not in use.

855

I belive the 855 series do not actually turn off they go into standby mode. I believe it keeps track of its location for faster (start-up) times. It is only truly off if you pull the battery.

My 855 has done exactly that at least once and probably a few times since I've found the battery dead a couple other times within a couple-few days of it being fully charged.

One solution proposed often is to remove the battery when not in use. That works but in addition to having to keep everything together and replace the battery each time it's used, I also have to reset my voice away from the default Jill to Jack or Karen or whoever I happen to want at the time. Each time my 855 has the battery removed (or crashes and goes through a reboot), the 855 reverts to Jill which is odd, as all other preferences remain as I had set them earlier.

And yes, I have the latest firmware and have gone through the hard reset procedure a couple of times to see if that cures the issue--it doesn't.

855 Battery Storage

I always remove the 855 battery when I am NOT expecting to use it again in a very few days. I place a small piece of Saran/Glad between the battery and battery terminals (folded over once), and this is thin enough to permit insertion of the battery cover...in a locked position.

I believe my wrap is only about two inches long; when folded, it is about 1/2 inch wide x 2 inches. [I happen to be away from home these days...so I cannot verify those estimates.]

My piece of Glad Wrap lasts so long that I have replaced it only once in 1.5 years, and saves the battery. This method is better than storing the battery outside the Nuvi, so that you never wonder where you put it. My Nuvi has never changed the Jill voice on me. [When the Nuvi is in use, the Wrap is kept in my Nuvi wallet case.]

I believe that my method also prolongs the battery life, in lieu of constantly draining/recharging.

while i haven't tried it

Did you ever think of renaming the voice file? Name Jill something else and then rename your preferred to the default. (Make certain you get ALL the files though.

855 completely drained battery.

I have had this happen to me as well. I keep mine in a case so I don't know if it came on by itself, but I have found the battery completely dead ... sometimes after it has only been stored a couple of days. Other times it will still have 3 bars after a week of storage.

One other thing I have found about the 855 is that it will not turn on at all when the battery is completely dead, even if I plug it into the cradle. I have to let it charge for 15 or 20 minutes before it will turn on.

Battery life

I believe that the battery used in the nuvi is a NiMH and under normal use it should operate satisfactorily for at lest 500 charge-discharge cycles. If used daily, this means the battery should be useful for 2-3 years. They also have a lower self discharge rate compared to many other type of rechargeable batteries.

Isolating the battery allows it to hold its charge for a reasonable period compared to the drain that standby mode imposes on it when left installed. If you used this GPSr only 2-3 times a month, you might see an extra year or more of useful life in that battery.

That being said, there is the variable where some batteries fall short of expectations and every now and then there is one that is the poster child for the pink bunny.

If I were talking about a person I would agree with you but I was talking about a machine. If you're trying to abolish the word from the English language that's going to be pretty hard to do. If I had a family member with that condition the word would not offend me in the least, In my opinion this country is getting carried away with political correctness, it's getting to the point where it's harming the country.

The 855 uses a Lithium ion battery not an NiMH.

Motorcycle Mama on this one I will side with Don B, if the term is not aimed at a person IMO it should not be taken as offensive, it is a common term in the mechanic lexicon when referring to an engine even when the description applies the same to a motor or a person it should be OK to use.

English language abolished because every words offends someone

I'm sure I will offend someone but maybe if you look at it as not what they say but how they say it. I guess every word will offend someone..Does that mean we should stop saying it?
It's clear the comment is directed towards a machine, not a person. Granted "retarded" might not be the best word to use but are people getting that touchy??...Really?

Beware...
