One question

Mr. Vanderdecker, my father and I were on I-95 in Virginia when a state police officer pulled him over. After looking in the trunk, he seized the Escort radar detector saying that it was contraband in VA. I knew VA had laws against them, so we didn't protest. We were never given any info on how to get it back.

So you can post all you want about legal theory, but the reality is that they took it and we never got it back.

My advice is that if someone is going to use a detector in VA, just keep it hidden. If you want to challenge the legal theory, go ahead, but why not just prevent the problem to begin with?

Why did you give the police officer permission to look in your trunk?

Hide & Seek

We have an elderly- by electronic device standards- upgrade worthy- according to the manufacturer, yet still capable, Valentine One Radar Locator.

I am loath to give it up, so at the VA border into my wife's purse it goes.

Reach in there at your peril.

The Valentine One is still a great choice since it has the "arrows" and its upgradable. I've upgraded mine twice.
I like the Escort but I don't like the idea that you have to pay $20 per month for the live app plus you don't have the "arrows".

that's a radar detector detector detector detector

Supposedly, my Escort can detect a radar detector detector and fool it. I guess that makes it a detector detector detector. I've read the most sophisticated radar units (sometimes used by state police) can detect a radar detector which has technology to fool a detector detector and can fool it. I guess that makes it a radar detector detector detector detector.

Which unit do you have?

They may end up with a detector that will detect that detector some day, and we'll need a detector for that detector grin

I have a 9500ix that I believe is "invisible" to radar detector detectors. Curious to know which model you have.

I guess this discussion is only relevant to DC, VA, US military installations, and all of Canada except for BC, AB, and SK.... (to the best of my knowledge).

9500ix can be detected.

Escort redline can't be detected by the police radar detector which Spectre RDD Radar Detector. Redline have an enclose casing made of magnesium casing that prevent leak signal. I think Valentine one work the same. The good thing about the redline, a user can be part of the Escort real time cloud system and have gps capability connected to the user phone. The cons about the redline, A user cannot update the redline without sending it to escort.

Is the redline GPS enabled? Being invisible would be nice especially when I'm in VA and DC, however I'd rather have GPS to lock out false alerts if I had to choose. This was the main reason for me to get the 9500ix when I purchased. The redline wasn't available at that time.

Anyway, back on topic:

The Escort IQ (Radar/Laser/GPS) would be a good option, although it is pricey. I wonder who supplies their maps and how often is it updated?

Redline not gps enabled

I was wrong not valentine 1 is bel-sti. I would recommended to read this link.

I have also have an 9500ix to filter false alert. Redline is good for most highway driving.

speed camera only take picture

I think people will begin to think a speed camera is better than a real cop who can take away your GPS if it is combined with radar/laser detector. smile

Wrong perception

Cop cannot take escort passport IQ which is combination of gps and radar/laser detection. Unless the user have its operational in Virginia, Washington D.C and any US military base. For ordinary motorist, The leo can give a driver a ticket not take it away for illegal operating a detector. For commercial driver, Rig above 10,000Ibs are not allow to have it their truck and can be subject to search and seizure. I heard a lots of story good story from truckers on how they hide their detector from plain site.
Their are no effective defense against pacing by leo, VASCAR (Visual Average Speed Computer And Recorder) is a type of device for calculating the speed of a moving vehicle and aerial patrol.
I have a friend driving a Aveo in MO and the state trooper give him a ticker for speeding even he is driving slower in the flow of traffic. The leo told him that you are the one I caught and the other driver where faster than you. He was driving 70 in a 60 speed zone.

I like the Speed Cams, I use the POI here as well as the database for Escort. I slow down once I receive the alert, speed back up once I pass it. Similar to a cop, but the camera doesn't see how fast you were going prior to the spot where it takes the picture smile

May have to wait for warrant

The issue you may have if you refuse the officer the right to search the vehicle is he or she may compell you to wait while they attempt to get a warrant. I believe they have the right to cause you to wait for hours if they want. That wouldn't seem like a great option. It seems like the biggest reason they might not do this is they would have to wait around too. But they are getting paid.

duplicate speed cameras

I am seeing they placed mobile speed camera about one thousand feet down the road after fixed speed camera. Mobile speed cameras can be seen at Rockville, Baltimore City, and other areas in Maryland. I feel it is duplicate to place two cameras so close... but, second (mobile) speed camera could generate more revenue for the city. We just don't know .. smile - smile

Interesting

Sounds like a great combo product! I might actually be interested in something like that.

The Escort 8500 x50 has "SmartShield VG2 Immunity"

I have the Escort 8500 x50. According to the manual it has "SmartShield VG2 Immunity". According to wiki.answers.com: The VG2 detects the electronic emissions of non-stealthed radar detectors ...
Radar detectors that use Shadow Technology™ are purported to be shielded in such a way that the amount of detectable emissions allowed to escape the detector are not enough to trigger the VG2 radar detector detector thus making them "immune" to the VG2.

Multiple Function Devices...?

It has been my experience that multiple function devices do not perform their "multiple" functions very well as compared to a "dedicated" device. I find that my Garmin GPS functions a lot better than the droid app on my phone. The mp3 players on the phone or on a GPS do not perform as well as my iPod Nano. The camera and video recorder on my phone do not perform as well as my stand alone digital camera. And none of them make or receive phone calls like my cellphone;)

Only the Escort RedLine and the Beltronics STI Driver are undetectable. I have both and I also have the 8500 x 50 Blue and it is not undetectable.
