Getting trouble following my GPS

On my last trip across the US I found myself in a big problem.
On our return trip from Maine we wanted to by-pass the big cities to avoid traffic. Instead we found ourself the cause of a traffic problem when our GPS lead us to the toll both of the Brooklyn tunnel. The gate keeper informed us we could not go in and made us do a U-turn in rush hour traffic. This was just the start, we found ourself s in Chelsey on streets built in 1800 in a 35ft motor home pulling a Jeep. Thanks to the local fire dept and police
we got back on track and went on our marry way. What I would like to know is there a program for RV's keeping you away from this problem (low bridges, small streets dead ends, and tunnels).

Mapsource, low clearance POIs

In short, there isnt any program for RVs. I have a 5th wheel camper that we pull. If it is a long trip, I use Mapsource to pre-program my 765t to go the route the way I want to go, by adding lots of waypoints to avoid recalculations. There is a POI that can be added that will alert you of approaching low clearance areas. Also, you are a really hardcore RVer, take a gander at the Garmin 465 for truckers.

Unless you are the lead sled dog, the view never changes. I is retard... every day is Saturday! I still use the Garmin 3590 LMT even tho I upgraded to the Garmin 61 LMT. Bigger screen is not always better in my opinion.

There are a couple of things

There is a low clearance POI file maintained by Firenuts that is current and used by many. The second thing is you may want to invest in a new unit for the RV.

The 750 is an excellent unit, don't get me wrong, but it's designed for passenger cars. You need to look into a unit designed for truckers which would have a lot of your routing headaches already taken into account. Garmin makes the 465 and the reviews are all over the map. One of the big pluses is the 5" screen. There are other units out there, so do some comparison shopping before committing.

Low Clearance POI

Besides getting a new GPS for truckers, you can load the Low Clearance POI file:

You also said you wanted to avoid large cities, so one has to wonder why you entered New York City in the first place. You didn't mention what GPS unit you have, but next time you can create a route and follow that so you don't get into trouble. Buy a Motor Carrier road atlas and use it.

The GPS is a tool to advise you, not a task master to be obeyed.

Better luck on your next trip!

Low Clearance?

This may have nothing to do with low clearance.

It has to do with the propane on your RV. In the New York City area and other areas such as Boston or wherever they have large bridges and tunnels, propane is prohibited in tunnels. Bridges all have their own regulations and direct your load accordingly. The George Washington Bridge has two levels and they want you on the upper level.

This has nothing to do with anti-terrorism. These regulations were in effect before 9-11. No GPS is going to route you around this. You need to study the route and the bridges and tunnels in advance because they all have their own regulations.
