Navteq Map Corrections

Hey guys. I was wondering about something concerning Navteq's map reporter site. Here's the thing: I've made 2 corrections in the past 6 months, and both have been "resolved" but neither of them have been added to Navteq's map database online. Each of my corrections says: "We are pleased to report that your requested change is already in the NAVTEQ map or was recently made prior to your request and will appear in a future release of the NAVTEQ map database." Well, I know for a fact that Navteq releases map updates at least 4 times a year because that's how many Garmin releases, and Garmin uses Navteq maps. So, after 6 months, why aren't my updates showing on the Navteq map database on their website? Do they only update their website once a year?

.

There's no set amount of time that they update them.

And it can take many years for the map corrections to make it into the actual maps.

NAVTEQ Map Corrections

Hi - I am a NAVTEQ employee. Have you tried checking the Mapreporter map? This is the most up to date map we have on the web. This is because it does not contain all the rich content of the other maps we have on-line. If your changes have still not shown up there, our next release is mid August.

NAVTEQ Release

Does this mean that Garmin's next update will not be prior to mid August?

No.

I don't think so. Garmin always lags behind Navteq in incorporating Navteq data. Garmin releases map updates on their own schedule so it could be any time and is not tied to Navteq's release dates.

Yes, I have been checking the mapreporter map. So if your next release is in mid august, what was the date of the last release?

Navteq

My understanding is that Navteq issues quarterly releases. If the next one is mid August the last one would have been mid May. If the Navteq employee can confirm this, that would be great.

Garmin have been working to a release schedule that allow them to be only one quarter behind Navteq releases. As you can imagine, when Garmin were only releasing one update a year, they could be almost a year behind Navteq's most current version.

A one quarter lag is probably about the best Garmin will ever get since they have to do their magic to the map data once they get a release from Navteq, before it's available for us to download or to purchase on DVD.

Yes, NAVTEQ's previous release of the map was mid-May. However, there is an additional 4 week period after the map release during which additional content is also released. Depending on the content that Garmin takes, this will effect the time at which they start their new map compilation effort. If you want to know about the timing of Garmin's releases, you will need to contact them.
Our Map Reporter website takes about 8 weeks from the date the map was published to the compilation, testing and posting on our website. The Q2 2010 release from mid-May will be available on the Map Reporter website by early next week.

Just wondering...

Do you update the Canada maps on the same regular basis.

Yes, the schedule I noted in my response was for both the US and Canada.

Thanks - but a question

If your website is showing Q2 maps and Garmin has released 2011.20 today then will your website and the Garmin map be the same release, subject to the any additions, deletions, changes etc that Garmin may have made prior to releasing their version?

Navteq POI - Marker question

I've updated several of our hotel locations through the Map Reporter tool and have a question about how each shows up on the map. Does the marker indicate the actual location of the building, or where the driveway/street entrance is located? Also, how do I go about getting my brand logo inserted as the marker?

Depends

On how you reported the locations - if by street address, the geocoding algorithm is somewhat error-prone, and would represent the location on the street in front of the given address churned out by the geocoder. If you gave them coordinates, then the marker on a map could show up within the level of accuracy your GPSr was getting at the time you recorded the coordinates - hopefully no more than 10 meters off.

Just reported a local big one

No more southbound on-ramp to Highway 101 at Coast Village Rd/Cabrillo Blvd in Santa Barbara, CA. Unfortunately, two weeks ago someone turned up the OFF-RAMP into NB traffic. Lots of tourists and GPS users are getting misguided, and all it takes is one DUI or idiot to ignore the heavy local signage. Hope they update this one soon!

Timeline

I submitted some reports to Navteq and I think the overall timeline will be of interest.

Changes to Navteq submitted Nov 2009. Closed by Navteq March 26, 2010. I got a reply back from Garmin's cartography department and here is what they said.

"In general it takes 3 to 6 months from the time NavTeq makes the change for it to be included in a Garmin map update. It all depends on when they send us the latest data. In the case of the two reports below, the changes will both be included in our 2011.3 map update due out in late October."

I personally think this is a faster response than I expected. The test will be to see if my changes end up on Garmin 2011.3 in October. I'll confirm when that time comes.

Also, when Navteq calls it resolved, I believe it only means that they have opened the file. It's only when it's shown as closed, can you believe it's on their map.

Navteq

Great to have some one from the company participating. Thanks for your input.

my POI updates are getting ignored

I've got over 600 map error submissions directly to Navteq via their mapreporter service, half of them POI updates, half road updates. All my road updates have been addressed by Navteq and alot of them are already appearing in the final map. But without exception, any POI updates I've sent them, they've all been ignored. They're status still says "open" and no changes have appeared on the map. Anybody else noticed this?

Who does what?

Navteq is clearly the company to which map anomolies need to be reported. However, is the same true of POIs?

Does anyone have specific knowledge that the POI file in Garmin devices comes from Navteq?

I would say

I would say that Navteq is the supplier of the POI file.

Thanks, charlesd45, for that link

Navteq

I found out the hard way...by spending my money on a Garmin map update. Not only were their no updates (in my area - NE Ohio), but they actually DELETED a city from their database (I assure you, it still exists!)

I complained to Garmin about this, suggesting that perhaps the problem occurred during electronic downloading of the "updated" map. They basicly refused to acknowledge this possibility and told me to take it up with Navteq. Perhaps Garmin (or Navteq) should use government Grapical Information System (G.I.S.) datum.
