POI name veiwable on Map without selecting ???

I work with a Power company and have placed our entire GIS map on the Nuvi... I have created around 40,000 POIs in a folder named "Transformer". I have these listed in a Custom folder and would like to figure out a way to have the "Name of the POI" pop up at a certain speed range or stay viewable until zoomed out to a level of about .3 miles or so.... I would also like to have the custom .bmp I created to remain viewable on the screen out to about 1.2 miles or so... I know this defeats the purpose of declutter and the speed of the unit, but it would really be benificial to me to have this functionality. This would help in a visual reference when in a area, rather than having to search for the POI in the list of Transformers. I realize that the unit will add the nearest 10 to 15 POI in the area, but I need a better way to view them on the screen.... I created the POIs in " ExpertGPS" and understand the basic functions of the export to .cvs, but was wondering if I missed something..... Thanks and I hope this isnt a repost... I searched and couldnt find anything that answered my questions...
not possible
You cannot display the POI names on the moving map screen as you want. In fact, many of the newer nuvis (2x5, 7x5 & 1xxx series) cannot even display your favorite's names on the moving map screen.

In addition to
In addition to DorkusNimrod's comments, the lowest scale where the POI icon shows is 300ft scale. The zoom will change as needed, though that too depends on the unit. Now, if you want a notification of an approaching transformer, when you load the file into the GPS using POI Loader, set a proximity alert. This is most commonly used for the red light camera file to warn users of the red light camera's presence.
With the proximity alert the transformer's name will display on the screen when you're within range of it and will remain present until you leave the proximity alert range. However, if you're looking for a specific transformer, you'll still have to search for it.

I was wondering if it was possible.... I did notice what you included about some models not showing a favorites name.. The 8x5 that I have will label the name, but the new 14xx model will not... Is there any other way I may be able accomplish this idea that I have??? What if I created a .img of the Transformers in a "map feature" format instead of a "POI" using Mapwel??
Thanks!! Ben

Proximity v TourGuide
blackriverwoodie,
I suspect that the transformers are not all within 75 feet of the road on which you might be traveling. If that is trus. then you need a TourGuide setup to alert you to them. Proximity alerts are "along the road". TourGuide alerts activate when the POI is within a certain "radius" of your current location.

After re-reading his reply
After re-reading his reply to me, I thought of that, and agree that TourGuide would be better than a simple proximity alert. However, I thought most transformers were mounted on telephone poles.

Great! You reminded me about his website. Now I'm in for another long night of playing with POI files.
Cool site
This is a very interesting site... Thanks!!

Tour guide and Alerts
I tried setting up the points using "stoplight" as part of the file name... This works great, but due to the large valume of transformers in an area, the proximity range is too big and many points gets missed... I also tried using "safety" and had the same issues.. Im gonna give the Tour Guide a try and see how it works... I also noticed where I missed the proxinity setting tab in the POI Loader... I'll check it out and let you know how it turns out.. Thanks to all of you for your help with this project...
Thanks!! Ben
Use Poi Loader in Manual
It doesn't matter what filename you use to do what you want to accomplish. Use Poi Loader in manual and specify the alert distance. If used in auto, the default is 1320 feet - a quarter mile.

If you use TourGuide in the
If you use TourGuide in the file name and use express mode for poiloader it will give you a 1/4 radius alert default. Not much so you may need to experiment with the manual mode distance setting to expand the radius.

Good Luck
Sounds like the number of locations in any given area will be the limiter. Using Tour Guide will compound that issue. If I read the post correctly you were already getting too many hits using the regular along the route method.
Wish you luck though and look forward to hearing how it goes.

I have recently learned what
I have recently learned what a POI is, so please don't take this random thought too seriously...
But would a special situation like this not benefit from a 'silent' alert tone...
What I mean is... it seems like he wants to be able to see every transformer that's within the area of his screen, so you'd want a large radius...
but the tone going off so much would be bad, so either a) turn off the tone without turning off the visual cues, or b) let the tone go ahead but make the tone something quiet. A .mp3 containing only a fraction of a second of ...silence.
What do you think? n00b had a good idea, or no?
Another question comes to mind here--
what if you're in the radius of more than one transformer?
More than one transformer and good idea
It's a good idea to use a silent alert because TourGuides need the sound file, even if it is silent. If you are within the alert distance of a number of transformers, they will each cause a visual alert on the screen, and the alerts will step on each other. I would set the alert distance very short so this is unlikely to happen. There has to be a compromise distance depending on conditions in the field.
