what am i doing wrong (avoiding motorways on nuvi 245)

i have had a Tom Tom for 4 years, just the basic model, recently its been playing up so i bought a garmin Nuvi 245
i know they get good reviews but i cant get on with it,on several trips now its taken me miles out of the way, i cant get it to not use motorways but still try for quickest, it does not show distance to destination just estimated arrival time
is it me doing something wrong or are these features not available on the Nuvi range

Settings

I did not know there was a 245 but assume it is in the 205 series.

What setting have you selected under
Tools > Settings > Navigation > Route Preferences
Tools > Settings > Navigation > Avoidances

route pref is quickest,

route pref is quickest, avoidence none, i need to just avoid 1 particular motorway not all of them
it just seems to pick much longer routes than the Tom Tom did and i cant find out what its trying to do

Just 1 motorway

I am understanding you to want to avoid one particular motorway.

Did the Tom-Tom allow you to do that? I think you will answer that it did not but I wanted to check.

Avoid location

According to the specs http://www.thesatnavwarehouse.com/productdb/garmin_nuvi_245/ you don't have a feature to avoid a particular location.

AFAIK, the only nuvis that allow specific road and area avoidances are:

nuvi 8x0/8x5 series
nuvi 5000
